skoda octavia facelift 1.4tsi dsg elegance

Featured Replies

has anybody got any feed back on the Skoda Octavia facelift 1.4tsi with the Dsg gearbox?

Its extremely refined compared to a diesel - you cannot hear or feel the engine when stationary which you most certainly could with a 2.0 PD.

And its got a lot less torque than a diesel (as you'd expect) but then its £3000 cheaper than the equivalent 2.0 diesel engined (common rail now) Elegance DSG.

I got the MFSW which comes complete with paddles. If you don't like kicking down (as I don't much owing to the feeling that I'm wasting fuel - even if that's not true), you need to use the manual function on the DSG to make rapid progress. The PD was pretty instant and didn't need much kicking down. That's torque for you.

The DSG is set to change up as soon as possible to save fuel so it doesn't help overtaking if you're in 7th at 35mph! There's no grunt at all. But it can be driven fast, no question.

I just like the refinement, the leather upholstery and most especially the sound system with the SD car reader. Marvellous. I don't bother with my iPod anymore.

The DSG box has fuzzie logic.

This gives it the ability to self program the shift pattern in accordance with the drivers mode.

So if the driver is an ambler, then the box will up shift as soon as practical.

However, should the reverse be the case then the box will hold onto a gear to ensure the maximum acceleration.

The change in shift pattern is not instantaneous but requires some little time to reprogram to learn the drivers changed mode.

We've got a 2006 L&K 2.0 DSG. Good and solid, but the PD engine is a grumbly old cuss until it gets up to speed. Also, the Audience sound system is a pain in the a$$ because the tweeters are so badly positioned - they should face away from the front setas instead of towards them. Wish I hadn't spent the extra money - it's wholly underdeveloped.

So, a few questions:

- Is the current sound system different from the pre-facelift model? If so, how? What sort of music do you listen to and is there a good sound stage?

- Does the DSG have a smooth take-up? Ours can be a bit jerky at times until fully warmed up. Silkiness is very important to us - we're looking for a limousine quality without spending MB prices.

- What sort of mpg are you getting? We're averaging 41mpg on diesel, which I guess isn't bad - but equally isn't good. What's it like with the 1.4 tsi?

- Are the paddles of any use whatsoever? I never intend to buy a manual car again for general use (though they're fun for a weekend bootabout) - can you have the MFSW without paddles?

And am I right in thinking that a new Superb would need something more powerful than a 1.4 engine? (They can be bought in basic trim - presumably for taxi drivers - and could be upspecced - but would that be a mistake?

Whatever we buy now would be for many retired years, so initial cost would be less important than long term satisfaction.
