My trip at Ben@Shark

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just spent 3 weeks touring Europe. (You can see cities i slept one or more nights)

First stop 2,000 miles away at Ben in Mansfield, since my ECU was encrypted, sos STS didn't work.

The guy is a star, 20 min to get the ECU out of the car, 10 min to flash it, so in 30 min we were testing the car around Mansfield. No black magic or mystic stuff, all in front of me, all explained nicely.

Immediately you can feel a different call to acceleration, more kick to your back, but still saving it for the Deutsche-Bahn on Europe.

I get back to London, send wife to shopping a few days, then back in Europe.

Surprisingly i loved French motorway, very empty, very straight, paid about 25 euros, but personally much more pleased then in Germany where all 3-4 lanes as busy, fast, but got to look in mirrors both ways constantly.

Also French were NOT doing any work anywhere, while Germans seemed to resurface every few miles.

Had heavy snow in Kitzbuhel, Autstria and heavy rain for hours on my way back, and factory Dunlops took it nicely. I have done now 9500 miles (15300km) in 4 months.

So the ECU remap difference: (This is a 1.8TSi)

1. Gear 2/3/4 feel much more powerful and more torque, just what i wanted for overtaking here as all roads here are dual carriageway, so not bothered with top speed or 0-60, just nice quick power.

2. Gear 4 is so universal now, from 30 miles to 100 miles it goes very quick and smooth, no holes, no lag.

On the way to Ben, i found my self a lot of times downshifting to 5'th to overtake on motorway, but now the 6'th is not just

cruising, once over 60, 6'th gathers pace much quicker.

Some stats @ 6,500rpm fully loaded (for those who haven't maxed the engine yet )

2'nd gear - 61 mph

3'rd gear - 81 mph

4'th gear - 102 mph

5'th gear - 129 mph

6'th gear - 141 mph

These are Maxidot digital figures, not real GPS ones.

Fuel wise i can't say for sure for normal day to day driving, as the driving was from local city, to high speed for hours, but overall for this trip over 4,700 miles it was around 35-38mpg. I did 100 mile test at 80 mph cruise control, it came at 44mpg, so i can't comment does it have a better economy or not, not that i'm bothered :)

All in all a definate plus for the remap, well worth it, and it really has changed the car into much more responsive machine.

Thanks to Ben, and maybe Xmass time, some new front breaks, decat, kitchen sink, etc :)

i hear on the grapevine from other tuners that the 1.8 TFSI stage 1 yields very good gains in comparison to a 2.0TFSi stage 1. have you dyno'd yours yet?

No i haven't dyno it yet. I will in a few weeks, but on my next trip to UK, i will arrange some more mods, and see what it does. Not sounding brash, but it held it's own against some nice cars on the bahn, 320d's, C-classes, VW.20TDi, i even chassed a Q7 3.0tdi and he gave way :).

The nearest comparison i can make is a A4 2.0TFSI (200ps) but that was a tiptronic, which I drove a few times at work, Scout does not feel any less capable than that, and somehow it feels kind of less stressed when pushed.

Nice write-up

You've certainly given it some good levels of testing!

Nice to see AutoRoute still in use too

Cheers,

Steve
