Electrical Problem HELP!

Featured Replies

Hi

I own a 2001 Fabia 1.4 16V elegance. The car has some electrical problems at the min. I think its the alternator not putting charge into the battery as the car is not holding it's charge. As I stalled on a hill then tried to start the car and it barley turned over i put a multi-meter on the battery and the reading was about 5volts. Could someone tell me a how to guide in changing the alternator plz.

Welcome :)

Sounds more the battery to me.

Get a jump start and check the voltage with it running

Check ignition light is coming on when you turn the key, and goes out when engine running. If not, the alternator sense wire will be broken at the connection near the gearbox. Very common fault.

The battery should read about 12v even when flat, if it is reading 5v then one of the "cells" is dead, if not 2 of them!! What have you done to the poor battery??!!

I would also check your alternator output voltage in case the regulator has bust and is feeding too much voltage into the battery (and hence killing the cells); check it at various engine revs, it should stay at the same voltage, if it keeps climbing with the rev range, you need to fix it or it will just destroy any new battery.

+1

also, once engine running, if voltages doesn't increase, indicates your battery not getting charge, so check cables and then alternator
