Fair priced Winter tyers

Featured Replies

Hi Yall,

Thanks to Mike on here i managed to get my mitts on a set of steelies, only 15" and the current tyers on them are not suitable for anything this winter..... so was wondering..... best tyer size:

195/??/15

and which ones?

i am looking at a fair price too as i don't have much cash to my name atm.

Any help would be much appreciated.... thanks

195/??/15

Since standard is 205/45 ZR16 then closest equivalent is 195/55/15

Remember to advise your insurance company...

Just paid £67 for 185 60 15 Continental TS800 Winter Contacts to go on my rims on my SE from local tyre supplier.

They were excellent on it last winter - recommended!

If I was looking for winter tyres size 195/55 15, I would probably buy

Nokian WR G2 - MyTyres.co.uk

or

Vredestein SNOWTRAC 3 - MyTyres.co.uk - Although slightly cheaper from camsill (£71)

Or try these which are All sseason tyres Vredestein QUATRAC 3 - MyTyres - Again cheaper from Camskill £65 from here

Camskill has this in the other sizes 185/60 15 and like Mytyres not many 205/50 15

i am thinking of 185 55 15 or 185 60 15?

or should i go with 195?

What do people think?

The narrower the tyre the better they are in snow. However you will get less grip in 'normal' conditions, but then you probably shouldn't be driving like a **** on winter tyres!

I went 185 60 as they were cheaper and easy to get hold of, the difference in rolling radius to the standard VRS tyres is very small.

If you want to check the difference in rolling diameter try this

Deleted as I ended up double posting - sorry!

I second that, my tyre place was trying to get me to go all the way down to 175/70s but I just went to 185/60s and that seemed to keep my wife happy last winter - there are whispers that this winter will equal last winter, so the steelies and winter tyres will get put on again next month (or so).

One thing to consider, is the 15" the correct width for 195 or 185 tyres, in my case, VW Polo 9N, I went down from 195/55 X 15 to 185/60 X 14 but most of the steelies that I could find were the narrow ones which tended t "top out" at 165/80 tyres, so I just got wheels with winter tyres from Mytyres.

Very nice and useful site - thanks for posting
