Anyone fitted a reversing camera to their Yeti?

Featured Replies

Its the one option missing for the Yeti that I think I would like. Sure parking sensors are great but a reversing camera would be a useful addition .

I was wondering if anyone had got one fitted and could comment on its installation, cost and usefulness.

I seem to remember somebody fitting one to a mk2 Octavia. Installed the camera around the number plate if I remember correctly.

It is standard on the Tiguan with RNS510 sat nav (columbus to us)

I wonder if the round Skoda badge on the Yeti's boot is the same size as that on a Golf V or VI? If it is and there is the same amount of space behind it then you could fit this:

And here is a link to someone that did it on his Golf V with all part numbers listed as well:

So who is going to install this first? And show us how to replace the VW badge with a Skoda one!

Looks complicated :dull:

It is a real pity this did not make it into the MY12 upgrades for the Yeti.

Agreed - my other half has one on her Golf 1.4TSi GT. The screen's clarity and brightness in low light is very impressive.

I would have thought you could mount one in the number plate recess next to the number plate lights - which is where it is fitted, fairly unobtrusively, in the XF. I do use it, mainly to place the car accurately in a space due to the nearly 5m length. The rear view on the XF is awful and I also wouldn't be without the side mirrors which tilt down when reverse is selected - and, of course, the parking sensors. The camera does suffer from spray and condensation in some conditions.

I also recall that when I was looking at the Passat CC, the rear camera couldn't be combined with a DAB tuner. I'm sure there is a perfectly logical explanation but it's lost on me...

Put one on the back of Dewi and you'd need to fit it with a washer and wiper!!

Try these people www.drwelectronics.com located at Kidderminster Worcs. Seen them at a few caravan shows and they have some reasonably priced stuff, including a variety of cameras - very helpful too.

If you look back at the photo that 9x10^5 posted you'll see that the camera is actually protected by the VW boot badge. This badge is fitted with a small motor. In normal forward driving the badge is closed and the camera protected from rain and dirt. Only when you select reverse does the badge open up slightly to reveal the camera lens.

It's a system that works well and even with the very muddy winter roads around here in this intensively farmed area the camera lens rarely needs a clean.

It really is a good add-on for anyone with the slightest doubts about their reversing skills (which certainly includes me - never a skill I really feel I've ever mastered in 45 years of driving). Can't wait for it to be included in 2013MY Yeti when hopefully some higher performance but lower CO2 petrol engines will also become available.

Now that would really be handy for the caravan and the little camping trailer, though I usually fold the centre seat down and open the rear door so I can see what I'm doing.

That would be something special if you could see it on the dash screen.

There are a few cameras on Ebay that replace one of the rear number plate lights. I reckon fitting might be complicated as the Columbus might need working on (VCDS?)

MotorMods in Cheltenham are offering a fitting service; has anyone any experience with them?

I had a reversing camera on a hire car in the USA. Maybe you get used to it but I prefer reversing "beepers" and looking over my shoulder to get a gauge of the space while reversing. I found the camera view disorienting and judging distances was very difficult - even though the screen had green/amber/red sections. I have park assist on my Yeti and that is so easy (lazy?) to use when parallel parking; the newest park assist systems can also reverse into a car park space which completes the auto parking system. Maybe next years face lifted Yeti will get this enhancement.

I thought it would be a bit of a gimmick but i really liked the camera on the cashcow i test drove with its 'aiming grid', my only worry was it didn't cover the corner quite so well.

I also think it would be a perverts dream... :bandit:

IMO impossible - unles you cut a big hole under the badge location. Yeti's tail door has no Golf like hole. Furthermore, is it possible to fit the Skoda badge to the WV device ? Are diameters the same ?

But I ask the opposite question I was asked in a thread I started:

http://www.briskoda....tail-door-trim/

Why not just install a mirror (or two - as I did) at the upper side of the window, on the inner side.

Actually, Friday I finally installed 2 round 3" mirrors. Changes from the posted photos of the test:

Arm(s) made of metal sheet is (are) now "L" shaped thick metal sheet pieces - optional hardware - not used - from an IKEA product.

Connection of mirror to the arm made from domestic metal sheet mirror hardware I managed to change and fit with screw / nut to arms and double sided mounting foam to mirror back. This hardware consist of two pieces - one sliding over the other, so there is a possibility of adjusting distance against the window, aside the angle adjusting around the screw / hinge.

Maybe later I'll post a photo.

Maybe later I'll post a photo.

Please do.

Sounds just the right thing for hooking the caravan up, as Sheila can never direct me the right way!!

I intend to. Meanwhile you can look here: http://www.briskoda....tail-door-trim/

This is a test as said. For your needs, a central mirror (as on my precedent Doblo) may do better. Aside the installation problem, keep in mind that as the central part of the window is smaller and sill is higher than sides, the distance of objects that are beyond the mirror's sight field, is greater than if the mirror is at the side of the window. Furthermore, the cap of the wipper's nozle restricts sight to about 50 cm / 20 inch from the bumper (At floor level. As level rises - distance decreases). You can't see the hook. But I think you can guide the car in the right dirrection, as the cap marks the center / hook. Something like docking an APOLLO to the Lunar CM...

For all of you that waited for the photos, the uploading problem was solved thanks to the site service,

so here is finall fitted mirror on left side. Right side is (obvious and speaking of wich) mirrored assembly of the left one. I used a "floating nut" (I had them in my DIY misc box) at the end of the arm to fit the sliding mirror holder device, but a simple nut and locking washer will also do.

Enjoy and good luck...

Postie has just been and delivered a sony CCD number plate reversing camera, unfortunately without any instructions.

Trying to work out how to get it all to work with Canbus now. I think I may have to ditch the idea of replacing one of the number plate lights and go for a separate camera. That still leaves the problem of the reversing lighrs. Taking power from the 12v. socket in the boot would mean the camera is permanently on, so not keen to do that.

I found this,

http://www.soundlabs...Multi Interface

and this

http://www.onestopcaraudio.co.uk/connects2-skoda-canbus-adapter-quaklock-p-4802.html

which seem to promise to do the trick, but I don't like the prices.

Any other ideas??

As far as I could learn, the most common way powering / switching a camera is by connecting it to the reverse light wiring. You must lead the wires trough the boot lid / lid trim, trough the flexible wiring hose between the lid and the body towards the reverse light wiring (I don't know how or if even possible leading extra wires trough). A plate light combined with camera or lid release handle combined with camera are good ideas because you don't have to drill holes in the outer side (metal sheet, paintwork) of the lid. A wireless camera is the easiest way of further driving video signal to a monitor, not having to deal with leading wires from back to front of the cabin.

Above bits ordered. .

The fitting instructions for the adaptor vcan be found on-line only after you have a customer number. There's a shotrt two page English one and a 14 page German one. Luckily I looked at both as there is a large red note there stating that the ppower to the camera must NOT be taken from the reversing liht circuit.

This is, I presume , the reason for the flickering mentioned on other sites as the Canbus does its thing.

I have seen mention made of putting a relay into the reversing light circuit and using this to switch power from the 12 volt socket in the boot. Would the current taken by this not trigger the Canbus? Taking power direct from the socket would mean the camera was permanently on, I believe, amd would eventually drain the battery.

My knowledge of automotive electrickery is from the days of cotton wrapped looms and milk bottle top and wire nail substitutes for fuses and has not progressed much further.

...........just be aware that if you buy from kufatec there maybe wont be any warranty or the fact that you cant get in contact with them.

My rear view camera interface was bought last year from them and last week camera shows black black screen all of a sudden anyway checked the camera and its ok but the black interface box seems to get warm, i have sent numerous emails to them and no replies os far :(

What I can't get my head round is whether or not this will mean canbus gives a light failure warning?

I seem to have found the bits if that's OK,

http://www.chinavasi...-license-plate/ for the camera

and

http://www.kufatec.d...eitung&info=775 for the interface

did you manage to fit the number plate mounted camera, if so any problems and how did you route the cable into the car in the end? I'm looking to purchase a rear view camera however I don't want to get into any canbus problems with replacving the number plate lights and also stumbled across the same camera as yourself, just wondering how you got on with it? Spoke to the supplier who emailed over a English instruction booklet but it was of no use, just a generic 1 page wiring diagram. Was interested to see you mention the problems when witring directly into the reverse light power, this is soemthing I'm also trying to avoid.

Cheers
