Sealed door carriers...but water still sitting on the rubber sill

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have had the car for two months now. I sealed the door carriers, and with the crazy downpour over the weekend i noticed there was no actual water getting inside the car. There was some definite moisture though i think...

However, upon opening the door, there was a fair bit sitting on top of the rubber door seal at the bottom of the rear doors...

Is this normal???? Do i have to open them up again?

What sealant did you use? The carrier is zinc coated, and silicon based sealants can still allow water to climb past the sealant, as it doesn't bond well to zinc. Unibond 3 in 1 sealer is the one to use. If you remove the door card and pour water from a suitable container onto the outside of the window, you will soon see if the sealant is leaking still.

We have had heavy rain here as well, and I checked my door rubbers yesterday, dry as a bone.

Hmmm, I would have thought Tiger Seal would be fine. Possibly just normal frame seal condensation due to all the rain.

Aye mate... that's what i was thinking...

We have had a lot of rain. And the carpet inside was not wet....Defo some moisture though....not damp...

Did you completely remove the door card when you sealed them? :)

mine are both dry. First time the seal did not hold but second time it has (well so far) though I have now found a slight pooling on the front passengers door so I get that will be the next job.

need todo mine floor is wet on both sides and windscreen is wet every time i go out grrrrrrrr

Mine was back in for the local garage to have another go at it.

My problem was always water on the seal of one rear door - the condensation wouldn't appear until after I got in the car, drove it, got out, and then got back i.e. it wouldn't have been a problem if I didn't have to breathe :) .

Funnily enough, in between waiting for it to get fixed again, after it had been raining I would wipe the seal with a spongey cloth (the type you wipe kitchen worktops with) to remove the water on the seal before getting in and driving off - no condensation!

Dealers don't always anyway - only if the seal is held with screws .If it's riveted ,they just seal .( That's what mine told me when they did mine under warranty)

If there's water on the door seal. It can't have been done correctly in my opinion.

I'd have another go. I'd put loads of sealant on and make sure you follow the guide religiously.

Am i being a total idiot (probably) cos i cant find the guide for sealing the doors on Briskoda. Help an idiot please!!!!!

On the subject of what sealant to use...

I've done mine recently with this ---> http://www.shell.com/home/content/bitumen/products/shell_tixophalte/

and it seems to have done a decent enough job.

Being a roofing prduct it can handle high temparatures and won't have

any problems sticking to either zinc (often used in roofing)

or WET metal. ( Which is why I think the op needs to do his again BTW)

Silicone doesn't stick well to wet surfaces... The gear I used can be applied underwater

if necessary... The foam seal round the door carrier holds on to some of the water

meaning the silicone is unlikely to stick properly unless you spend a tedious 4 hours there

with a hairdryer drying it out.

In this particular application a tidy bead is secondary

to whacking loads of it on completely burying the joint in sealant :D

I squirted a bit over each of the lower rivets too.

Tixophalte cleans up really easily with white spirit, unlike silicone.

Before anyone asks me where I got it from.

I borrowed some from work, they bought it in in bulk for a job

direct from Shell.

If you use the miracle of the internet you shall find it somewhere.

Expect to pay £8 to £10 a tube I reckon.

and even if they do it doesn't always hold. Had my done, less than two years later leaking again!

if you want something doing right do it yourself :dull:

ive sealed mine, the water is just settling on the rubbers now, does this mean its still leaking?

on the 1 side i usewd bath sealer but i suppose thats crap like, will i have to remove all of the old stuff or just apply straight over that?

Sounds like you still have the problem. That water you are seeing will be going

down between the door seal and the interior trim and be soaked up by the carpet

and soundproofing directly below the door. My point being that

it may look like its just sitting on the seal. It's not. It's still coming in!

My rear doors used to be like that but are dry now after a downpour.

If it was my car I'd strip all the mastic out and start again to be honest.

It's what I'd do if I sealed around a bath and it leaked.

Look for signs of seepage before you do to give you a clue where

to apply a bit more next time.

I haven't tackled my fronts yet but only my passenger side front

is letting a tiny amount through when there's loads of rain. Driver side

is dry but I'll do it anyway. Hopefully Friday weather permitting

All going to plan, Bezzy should be joining me for a seal up day.

Well...got my car sitting in a mini warehouse with the rear doors open and the door cards propped open (using two pencils on each door) waiting for the door to dry out so i can start sealing on the weekend. Got hold of some Tiger seal as recommended.

There is a knack to prising the door cards off, a knack that i dont have, so i managed to break all seven of the plastic rivets on each door. Ordered a large bag of the little buggers so im sorted for that. There is a lot of water oozing from the door so hopefully all will be dry (or at least dryer) by Saturday.

Will post how i got on after the weekend. That may be an amusing post as i am not the best at DIY (see my PD160 post).

PS. If i dont post anything by November can someone ring the Fire Brigade as im sure i will have bonded myself to the car...or worse :p

Local garage tried to fix it again - last repair held out for several weeks but this hasn't worked at all - some water on the seal again :( . Don't see the point in going back to him again - if he can't fix it in two attempts I can't see a third being any more successful.

Don't know what to do now, unless some kind soul within a 50 mile radius of Glasgow would be kind enough to show me the ropes :p - I fear tackling it myself would end in :'( .
