Hi guys any help would be awesome

A few days ago my fans would make a whiny noise as they started up, and that carried of for a few days. Today however they have stopped completely. I will see if they work again tomorrow morning.

Any suggestions on what may have happened and how to resolve it? Oh and car is '99 and has done 150k

Do they work on setting 4 or not at all? I know there is a common fault on VAG cars where the resistor burns out. If they work on 4 but no other settings it could be this.
