DVD rewriters

Featured Replies

So should I throw it away and buy a new one. Decisions ..... :scared:

You could keep your good one for high quality "legit" DVDs.

Then get a cheap one for playing MP3s, copied DVDs, etc. Though you might find the quality of the cheap ones isn't as bad as all that.

Some even have VGA output, so if you've got a projector you can hook it up using that for a good quality signal...

Rob.

TBH I don't own a copied DVD, or even a VCD. I only ever had this one, and I don't have it any more - it just hacked me off not to be able to play it after I'd paid for it. But one must move with the times, so I was curious ...

WHSmith do a "Skyworth" branded player that will read anything including .avi files for thirty quid.

A new multi region quality branded player would cost you about 60-70 quid.

wheres the best place to buy media from, looking for ones with the riadek purple dye and ones that I can print directly onto?

I've just got a new laptop, I've found a few RW disks at work but my playstation 2 doesnt like them. Works ok with -R disks, but we haven't got any at work that I can borrow

Really - what, multi-region too? That's awesome but I've read DivX/AVI playback can be unreliable, different codecs etc?

I've got a divx dvd player from Aria which cost me about 60 quid and it has played everything that I've put in it so far.

The whs one (and mine) may struggle in future as new versions of divx emerge , but for thirty quid , who cares

Yes I was looking at that one from aria too (though they never refunded my credit card for a faulty returned item :thumbdwn: and I'm too busy/disorganised/important/rich to follow them up on it).

For

I use a Lite-On dvd burner, form the puter fair (of course), and I findit far better than the Pioneer 106 I had beofre.

I also have a Pioneer DV575 dvd player connected to the TV, it plays all the disks I throw at it as well as Divx, and has progressive scan.

but now that I've finally worked out how to author a proper DVD from a DivX file

How do you do that? I've downloaded CSI:NY which isn't out here yet, would be nice to watch it on the dvd player.

Tub of 25 discs for under a fiver can't be bad - only had two or so coasters in the 200+ I've burnt too

ha ha-ha ha-haaa... it's ridiculously dificult until you know how :)

I tried loads of times with various applications as per the (in-depth but mysteriously fruitless) FAQs on doom9.org and had all sorts of different unsatisfactory results - sound going more and more out of sync the longer you watched, 'juddery' video that continously oscilllated between 5 and 50 fps etc. Add in that it can take ~5 hours to re-encode 1 hour of video equals serious frustration.

You can do it as follows:

1. D.I.K.O - works and is simple but not very flexible, one-stop programme, though free version kicks out files with 'non-standard' sample rates/fps/something or other. I tried it with two files, one works, one didn't after which I gave up but try it, you might have better luck and more patience.

2. NeroVision express - again a stand alone programme, didn't fail but messes up your file associations and was very slow. I didn't like this at all :thumbdwn:

3. TMPGEnc Source creator/DVD Santa to re-encode > TMPGEnc DVD Author to create menus etc > DVD Santa to burn. Can't go wrong with this - encodes quickly and at a high quality. Not too much hassle using multiple programmes either.

Another big :thumbup::thumbup: for blankdiscshop/SVP as plugged above - unbelievably cheap media. Also the metal DJ style boxes they sell are ace
