vRS TFSI stutter / hesitation

Featured Replies

Hi all, I've got an 07 vRS TFSI that has covered 76k miles or so and has developed an annoying fault. At about 70k one of the coil packs completely failed and had to be replaced but since then I've noticed that the car is really unsmooth and stutters on light throttle openings and an awful lot when started from cold until the engine warms through.

Part of me thinks the new coil pack might be the issue but the rest of me thinks that there are three other coil packs that have done 76k miles and are more likely to be at fault... I know in a recent evo buying guide on the GTI they noted that coil packs tend to fail together too. What's the concensus on issues like these, return the car to the dealer and point towards the new coil pack at the risk of them billing me for a load of time when it isn't that or should I buy a coil pack and go through a process of elimination on the others? (I assume these are available and easy enough to change once I get the engine cover off...?!)

Is there anything other than the coil pack(s) that it is likely to be and any test I can carry out?

Cheers

The first thing I would do is get your car scanned for fault codes. Usually if a coil pack goes it throws up a fault code.

Hi All,

I have a siimilar fault (un-smooth/stutters on light throttle openings when cold) at a similar mileage on an 07 VRS. Mine has been scanned, but no codes present. Any ideas?

The coil packs will need to be very bad (ie illuminate the engine management light) to log a fault code. When they do this you WILL know it's failed as the car will run on 3 cylinders not just stutter.

My guess is that the other coils are failing, they usually do go as soon as you replace one, its sods law. You should just replace all four together.

Get the uprated ones from here: http://www.psituning.com/product.php/19167/genuine_vag_red_coil_pack_set___2_0tfsi

These are from the higher powered VAG cars like the Golf R, Audi R8 etc. so should be more reliable than the cheap crap ones from Euro Car Parts.

I replaced one of mine and another failed so purchased 3 from Euro Car Parts, only to find that the one I replaced was no longer stocked, so now have 1 kind and another for the other 3. Guess what - the single one has started to fail again!

Mine still does it sometimes also, had it scanned and no faults found, it just seems to go into limp mode for a while like my old mk4 gti did, i have changed loads and it still bloody well does it.

Apart from this i love the car.

Check your Spark plugs, these can cause similar issues.

It's been know for garages not to change them even though you paid to have them changed :wonder:

I changed them last week mate.

You sure its not a boost leak somewhere?

Mine goes into limp mode if I welly it in a high gear, this is because I have a hairline crack in the manifold/turbo housing causing a sensor to read that its overboosting.

well i have had a smoke test done and that came back negative, and i was there when it was being done.

The only fault code i get rarely is PO171 (bank 1 running lean) so bought a new MAF, new plugs, and new coilpacks fitted yesterday, and this afternoon it went into limp mode again.

Also got a new revised DV fitted, and a BSH PCV fix, and fitted an Autotech cold air feed, this was all done prior to my remap being done, and the limp mode was there before and after the remap, which was taken off the car anyway as it was S***E.

Odd then as a hesitation 99% of the time is ignition related, spark plugs, coil packs etc.

Well its always the 1% i have the joy of finding lol

Never easy!

Can also be a blocked injector or carbon build up.

See the post I made a couple of days ago ( about 3 pages back - 2.0 fsi judder). I had these symptoms on my 105k 57plate tfsi. Cleaning the significant oil build up off the back of the intake valves completely solved the problem ( I posted a couple of pictures). It's a time consuming job, but she runs like a dream now.
