So I'm getting it serviced

Featured Replies

Taking my newly purchased car in for a major, long life service tomorrow. It's at a place in Bothwell; 'Audi VW' repair centre. It's independent but all of the technicians or mechanics are VAG punters. Endorsed, not official.

The car has done 99,000 Miles. It has a limited service history, with the first owner recording everything up until the beginning of 2005. Between then and 2007, for whatever reason, nothing has been logged in the service book. Mileage intervals are completely average; between 8,000 and 15,000 a year. Why the first owner would neglect to record the services after that point - if indeed it had any - I don't know, perhaps he'd had work done at a place whom weren't signing the book or through a friend.

The second owner, whom I bought it from, had all/any of the work done through a friend. Both worked for the fire-brigade, presumably this was the guy that done the work on the trucks and whatnot.

I was happy with the cars condition. so as I say I bought it. The book records oil changes and other mandatory replacements... Aside from... Bizarrely, at 20,000 miles/2 years, a brake fluid change. That wasn't performed. It may have been since, but it certainly hasn't been recorded.

The same goes for the cam belt and associated kit. The guy informed me that the previous owner had had it changed prior to his purchasing it, that would've been at about 55,000 miles in 2007. Which... I'm obviously curious about as it's sixty thousand usually isn't it?

So, condensing... I want to know if the cam belt and pump etc, the brake fluid and anything else need changed. I'll ask the guys at the service place to have a look.

Is there anything else I should be fretting about?

Never skimp with brakes (touch wood anything happens) but touch wood isn't good enough if anything happens is it?!

Change the cambelt/waterpump for piece of mind.. price of a belt change will be a fraction of a top end rebuild and give a hell of a reassurance to the next buyer if you plan to sell in the near future

Stand by for a bill close to £800 for that lot mate.
