Wheel Bearing Noise?

Featured Replies

I replaced the nearside front wheel bearing on my MK1 Octy this weekend because it had appeared to become pretty noisy, I put the car back together took it for a test drive and the noise is still there!!

I replaced the nearside one because it was making a grumbling sound as I drove around RH bends, I checked the disc shields werent catching on the discs on both sides, I've checked for play in the outer CV joints on both sides which I couldnt find anything obvious. I've also had all four wheels in the air and spun them by hand to see if I could hear any noise coming from them.

Now I'm stuck....

Is it possible that the CV joint is knackered? If so, wouldnt I be able to tell by play in the axle? Am I right to assume that the issue is something to do with the nearside of the car since the noise only appears when steering to the right (i.e. the outside wheel is loaded)

Any advice/pointers would be appreciated!!

Cheers...

If the CV joint was knackered it would be more of a clunking noise on turning so I doubt it's that.

Don't think you'll hear wheel bearing noise with the car jacked up as they only start rumbling when pressure (from the wieght of the car) is applied. Check by jacking up and grabbing the wheel at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions and applying force in a rocking motion. Do the same going around the wheel.

As for the rumbling noise itself don't assume it is a bearing as I have had similar noises from tyres, especially winter ones.

Check for play as above if there is none your bearings are ok.

I replaced my front wheel bearings due to a noise, sadly the noise didnt go & after a bit of diagnostics it was decided it was coming from the gearbox. :'( i cant tell you if a new box cured it as i traded the car in recently. :)

Hmmm....

Thats my concern.... I was worried it could be one of the diff bearings which I'm guessing is a new/recon gearbox
