Started my fabia today from cold, horrible noise like misfiring then stalled. Any ideas?

If it still runs, but very roughly with no power then its probably a coilpack failure - they cost £30 ea from Skoda and £25 from GSF (OEM version). Easy to change. Once running smoothly again, the Engine Check light will stay on for a day or so - just ignore, it will go out.

The coilpacks are mounted directly on the spark plugs, one for each cylinder. They look like this. Just unplug the connector and (12V engine) use a couple of screwdrivers to prise up high enough to pull by hand, 6V engine just pull off by hand.

Buy a new one and try on each spark plug in turn until you find the faulty one. Finally, change spark plugs if they've done more than about 35,000 miles - I find a coilpak usually seems to go when you go too long without changing spark plugs (absolute max 40,000 miles) but that may have just been me.
