Fabia I - Bearing type noise

Featured Replies

Hi all, i've had a strange noise while driving which sounds like the near side front (i've seen posts about mistakenly identify sides so still could be that i guess).

So far weve replaced the nearside front wheel bearing, nearside rear brake disc/pads and abs sensor (sensor melted and disc glazed, theres been a lot of heat somewhere along the line) and nearside rear wheel bearing but still have the sound.

I ve been doing this with my father in law who seems to think it could be drive shaft or cv related but not got any play either side (well i say nothing, he seems to think nothing more than you'd expect, ive not done a lot of driveshaft type work before so i bow to his experience).

The noise seems to be worse when going round left hand turns so thought it was bearing load on outer or inner race (depending on what side was at fault), but is pretty noisy at any speed in straight line aswell. I was originally worried it was gearbox, but sounds a bit to crunchy for gearbox (my only expierience of gearbox problems was when i got a whole in the gearbox casing on and older car and just got loud whirring noise), and still get the noise when in neutral (admittedly it slows with engine and roadspeed so i guess still could be gearbox? but dont feel its the gearbox personally)

any ideas would be great before we start replacing more parts.. of course it still could be offside front bearing?

thanks

Leon

by the way this is on a mk 1 fabia 1.9 tdi 100bhp 2001 if it makes any difference?

I'd replace the bearing first. i know it will probably sound stupid but i once thought my rear bearings needed changing (had that droning sound) and it turned out my rear tyres were so old they were humming and a change of tyres silenced the sound!

Also might help if you post this in the Fabis forum too :)

I'd also say to change the rear tyres! We've had this on both our fabias and changing the rear tyres solved the problem! They had worn flat spots on the inside! :S

thanks for advice, id much rather be replacing two tyres to solve it than pulling another bearing this week. Funny that but i just text my father in law saying i was going to replace the two rear tyres as there was a bit of uneven wear on the nearside one (one of the reasons we replaced the bearing, that and the fact the abs sensor was melted!). Anyway i will give it a go and thanks for the advice. I will post when we find the solution. Also apologies i thought i was posting in the fabia forum.

if it makes the noise worse when turning left driverside front bearing could be worn as when turning left the weight will shift to drivers side just a thought tho

has no one you know got a vag car with 5x100 hubs thinking of swapping rear tyres and then go for test drive might be worth a shot saves the cost of two new rear tyres if its not them?
