Wrong shocks?

Featured Replies

Had a cracked springe in my GF's 1.9tdi fab. Went to the breakers and got a pair of shocks - told the breaker the type and year of the motor. Now the shocks he gave me were much newer (looking) than my old ones. Got them fitted and now the cars does go over speed bumps too well. It seems like the car hits the bump stops on the front shocks - its like the shocks weren't built for the weight of the car????

Is it possible there's different shocks for different years, or engines?

Another way to describe it would be like they are just too soft.........

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but if you said you broke a spring why have you changed the shock absorbers? If your original shock absorbers are OK why not just refit those with your new springs?

Spring rates will depend on the engine - you'll need springs from a 1.9TDI, nothing else. Personally I wouldn't want to use secondhand suspension parts from an unknown source, especially dampers. New springs are about £40 each from a dealer.

Your right, however it was £35 for a pair of shocks from a big name breaker - or £80 for new springs from the dealer. I went for what seemed the cheaper option.

My guess is the petrol engine fabia springs are rated for a "lighter" front end.............?

There will a massive difference in the weight of a 1.9TDi block in comparsion to say a 1.2 3cyl one.

As has already been mentioned, I would NEVER fit 2nd hand shocks or springs, its a false (and possibly dangerous) economy.

The springs being far too soft could be dangerous in a driving situation, whether it be handling or braking.
