Hi

after 2 audi A6's and 3 honda CRVs all top or well specified cars, i also have taken the plunge to Skodarism and so far the buying process has been excellent (car not due to nov/dec)

yes there is a stigma attached to Skoda from some people mainly Saab drivers ie my Boss !!! but everbody else i speak to say the same thing "oh a skoda, its just a VW or Audi in diffrent trouers "

but to be honest i really couldnt care what others think i looked at lots of cars in the 20-30k price bracket before making my choice and to be frank nothing else came close

in last weeks Autocar they reviewed the new 520d touring they rated that 1st merc E220 2nd Skoda superb 170 elegance 3rd audi A6 4th and volvo V70 5th the difrence is to spec the Premium brands to the same as the Skoda was well over £10k more so to be even considered in that group really shows how far skoda has come

enjoy

Oi, I'm a Saab driver and I've seen the light (both of them, moving in time with the steering... they're great, lol). I've had a number of VWs and Audi's and was considering the Passat CC until I decided an estate was required... I didn't even consider the Passat estate though...! :D

I'm sure Diesel Car or AutoExpress compared the Superb Estate and the E Class Merc and basically said they couldn't justify the additional cost for the Merc, so the Superb won as it matched the Merc on everything else (spec, quality, performance, etc).

strange. My Octavia has a self dimming door mirror on the driver's side

Mine has it too and the interior one also has self dimming with on/off buttom

Do you have the link to this article ?

The Superb Combi Elegance spec in Ireland, has the auto-dimming door mirrors as standard, but back to the topic's name, " Badge Snobbery", when you have driven the Superb Combi, and would still wish to fork out an extra €22,000 , in my opinion, it would be more like "Badge Stupidity", In this day and age, any money extra that anyone has, is better kept by them, than given to a dealer, who is only selling a badge.

Means nothing now, I had a mk4 golf gti and now have a mk1 Octavia vRS. I personally think the Octavia is a better looking car and there is no difference in build quality. In fact the Octavia feels better to drive. My misses did not believe it was a Skoda the first time she saw it.

Andyrep ,you want to tell your boss his Saab is just a last spec Vauxhall in drag! :giggle:

My new Superb Combi replaced my wife's Lexus IS250 - the Superb is a better car all round in my view, but here in Australia, the Lexus has probably attained the same status as Audi/BMW/Mercedes. I've had a couple of people ask me why I "downgraded" - when I take them for a spin, and they get a chance to look at it up close, they are seriously impressed. Don't worry about badge snobbery. In a quirky sort of way, you could almost say that the Skoda has a sort of "Coolness" to it

Well most have already said it, Skoda now has the qaulity that VW had back in the 80's /90's, Im going back to Skoda, after 2 yrs away ( should never have left really).

When I bought my Mk1 Octy alooong time ago, 3 others including myself, went out to pub lunch ( i didnt drink), one of the guys was my boss & only noticed when we came out of the pub to go back to work that he noticed with surprise "its a Skoda !", I asked him what he thought it was -------- he said BMW emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gifemoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

If the badge bothers that much, they can be removed & the holes smoothed over, & the other boot badges easily be removed with dental floss :)

I have been deciding on new car for several months. Couple of months ago, I didn't even wanted to hear to check out the Superb. Also, some people I know, and which I asked for advice said.. "Yes, it is a good car (VW), but it is Skoda..."

Now... since 2 weeks I own a Superb Combi 2,0 DGS automatic gearbox, Elegance equipment. I must say it is really a SUPERB car! It is big, with great attention to details, good build and very pleasant to drive. If you will go for DSG gearbox, take 170 hp, and you will not regret your decision ! I am quite tall (190 cm) and the drivers position is excellent (in my opinion better than bmw520). Those people mentioned above where speechless. After checking it out and a test drive, they all agreed it is the best buy!

hope this helps,

regards!

My superb has the rear dimming interior mirror however the door mirror does NOT dim .

My E Class had a dimming door mirror and the lens was filled with an electrolyte the Superb door mirror glass is just glass nothing special

In slight defence of some of the badge snobs, some of them might be restricted in which brand of car they can get as a company car.

A friend recently had to replace his company car Saab after writing it off quite spectacularly (and miraculously without major injury).

The list of cars he was allowed to choose from included Audi, VW, BMW, Merc, Lexus, Honda, Toyota, Ford and Volvo

Skoda were noticably absent from his list. (Seeing as he works for one of the "not really Scottish any more banks, it's nice to see the bankers cutting back :dull: )

On my Octy, the driver's door mirror has what looks like a clear sticker over ~95% of the glass - at night, this is the bit that dims

surely as car lovers we choose cars for the way they drive.

when did we start buying cars that OTHER people like ????

in england all bmw drivers are ***ts anyway.

WELL SAID

I have little patience with people who are so shallow that they cannot be seen with or in anything unless it is the fashion or the right image.

People should make their own choices based on their own personality and build up their own unique image. Life is too short to simply be one of the crowd.

I road tested a lot of cars. BMW 3 & 5, Audi 4 & 6, Jag XF, Merc C & E, plus a lot of other ordinary cars I wont bother to name. For me, I preferred the Skoda Superb Elegance TDi CR170 that I purchased.

If someone wants to criticise my choice, that says more about them than it does about me.

I chose a Superb 170 combi elegance because it isn't a merc...or a BMW...or an Audi.

Having just come back from a trip to Sweden where I spent a bit of time in a V70 I'm amazed at how much more refined and roomy the Skoda is compared to the Volvo (Volvo seats are comfier and leathers better though..).

Hi GordenH

Volvo have a totally different view on luxury and design.

It is Scandinavian in heart. In scandinavian design "Less is More" and that comes from the culture where we don't want to show if we have money.

So the design is more conservative with straight and functional lines. The most of the money is instead put on comfort and safety where it truely excells.

Skoda Superb on the other hand is luxurios in a germanic european way. With a little more "look at me" details.

That said, i'm going for the Superb this time :)

  • 9 months later...

I moved away from BMW (after about 8 BM's - including the E30 M3) to a Skoda Octavia - which IMO was a much better all round car.

The only thing the Octavia was lacking in is rear legroom, so after 3 years I sold it and bought a MKI Superb, this is very soon to be replaced with a Superb Combi.

If you really find yourself struggling with the badge when you buy one (after you drive it you will be buying one :giggle:) then simply put some stainless Milotec covers over them

100_01_640.jpg

Hello can you please advise as to where i can get a set of those stainless Milotec covers for my superb, they look very smart, thanks

Kind Regards

Bisk 35.

Why not get the new Skoda badge.

Phil.

Well the new badge isn't officially available until next year.

Of course you could get some made up yourself - but the quality (in my opinion) isn't the same.

I like the new badge and will be replacing all visible badges on my Octy vRS with the new one once I can get my grubby little mits on them.

Why not get the new Skoda badge.

Where can i get this badge Phil ??
