recon engine, reduced power

Featured Replies

At about 105k I had a reconditioned engine fitted to my 08 Octavia 1.9 tdi taxi. Since then the car's been noticably underpowered, especially at low revs and in lower gears. I also suspect the top speed is reduced. Strangely, the fuel consumption display which used to regularly show 40mpg now reads around 29, although on filling up the true fuel consumption is nearer to the original figure ( ie it reads wrong!) since the car's been back twice to the engine fitters without any real improvement, can anyone suggest how it could be set up to regain the power it had before?

Does it have the same engine code as the one it replaced mate?

I suspect a mis-match between the engine and the engine-management system. Engine code, injectors, ECU etc could be incompatible with the replacement. Not only are there many variations of the 1.9PD engine but there were also year-to-year changes.

Where are you based

Someone on here may know a decent tuner local to you who could take a look to see whats going on. Because they are always "tinkering" with cars they tend to have a better idea than the usual garages

I would agree with the posts above that something/ things fitted dont match the original parts

It could be a duff MAS

With a problem like this, it really is a 'Back to basics' situation.

First job must be to check the cylinder compressions. If there is a problem here, everything else is irrelevant. As it's a recon engine, nothing can be known with certainty and the obvious mustn't be overlooked.

A cylinder compression test must be the start point. Trouble is; all this modern electronics tends to make us overlook the very basics.

The fact that the fuel computer reading is incorrect is a classic symptom of wrong engine management system component.

Can't say, I'm afraid!

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter, which I'll mull over .

Cheers for replying. I'm in Dundee. Wouldn't mind going to someone who knows what they're about if it got things back to what they were before. Even the local Skoda dealership here has closed down.

Cheers for that. New MAF was fitted by engine fitters but without obvious imoprovement.

Maybe an engine tuner could use that as a start point. Cheers.

If its on finance and you have paid half, first order a new one from the taxi centre, and hand that one back to the finance company without any come back

Good idea, but not on finance, I'm afraid. Cheers for thought, though

Just out of interest why did you need another engine??

Just out of interest why did you need another engine??

I was on holiday and had left the car with a driver. car started to make ominous sounds and various mechanics concluded the big ends were away. Strange, as the oil had been checked, no oil light was seen, and the car had been regularly serviced. as its a working car it was a question of getting an immediate replacement, or facing a bill for refurbishment PLUS loss of earnings for about 3 weeks. From a mobile phone abroad, your options are a bit limited, so I reluctantly went for the replacement recon.
