I know this can be a sign that the cat is on its way out on a petrol car, is this the same for a diesel? I've also thought that power feels down a little, would a dodgy cat affect this also?

Surely if you're smelling it when going forwards even at slow speed, if it was your car producing the obnoxious gas the motion through the air would take it away prior to it getting to the heater air intake - are you sure it's not the car in front? If you'd said when stationary or reversing (though the car switches automatically in recirc. mode in that context) it might have been your car...

It's not a permanent thing, just noww and then. The mrs said it was my imagination, but then it happened when she was in the car.
