Which Router ?

What does anyone have to say about the wireless performance of these?

I've seen good reviews, but also others that say they have a low sync speed and wireless that drops out. Have these issues been fixed in their firmware updates?

Having been playing around with 5 different routers over the last few weeks

One thing I've noticed with dismay, is how the N capable models have considerablely poorer connection strength and stability than the G models.

This seems to fly in the face of the claims made by manufacturers about the increase in speed and strength of N mode.

My main laptop is N mode capable too (Toshiba R600 Portege with an embedded Intel 5100 AGN adapter), even when operating in N mode connects no faster than my old Sony T1XP (G mode)

The ZyXel P-660 is a truely terrible bit of kit, even in unsecure wifi mode, using a static IP on the client, the wifi refused to connect. Even tried putting both router and laptop into A mode - still didn't work.

The Tenda W300D, which I'm stuck with until the DrayTek Vigor 2710 I've ordered turns up, refuses to active its DHCP server, so I've assigned static IP's. When the connection does drop, it refuses to accept the wireless key that was previously entered and accepted ...

Can't say I'm looking forward to the arrival of the DrayTek, as it sounds like I'm in for a battle to get that working too ....

Do any of these manufacturers test their software before dumping their cr*p on the punters ?

Real pity I can't find another Guru GWAMRU-54108. Worked Perfectly for 6+ years.

Never dropped WAN connection, even on a badly damaged telephone line. WiFi worked faultlessly, Hads lots of legacy windows network support built into its DHCP server (wifi clients could logon to Windows NT domains, Active Directory, etc, without issue).

WDS worked perfectly.

Actually I've had various ZyXel 6**HW routers including a 662HW and it's wireless has been rock solid.

I'd say they were the best of the bunch for stability and features working when released.

As for "N" it's always more liable to noise from other boxes since it bonds channels, so I'll be keeping on G as I don't care that much about it.

If you mean A mode, then I think that's not legal in the UK, so you should try B, G and N.

In the UK A will get a lot of noise from a licensed band.

mental blockage, yes B not A :smirk:

I noticed with a lot of kit these days, how one specific model can work well, but another with just a slight difference , is a heap of poo.

Another satisfied Draytek user here. It's all this site's fault, but the 2820N is a very good bit of kit - no doubt

For less demanding requirements I tend to use Netgear or Linksys routers for normal home broadband usage.

When sharing a house it's nice to be able to log who was doing what and at the same time apply heavy QoS to bit-torrent etc.

I used to slow my lodgers down when they were torrenting :giggle: when I had my 2800.
