Replacent wing mirror and puddle lights?

Featured Replies

So, the wife comes in about an hour ago holding the remains of my drivers side wing mirror :swear::@ some little turd thought it would oh so amusing to kick it off!!

Anyway, its beyond repair so I need a replacement, I was pleasantly surprised to see I can get a new one for about £80 on flebay, my question is the adverts say that it doesn't include the 'puddle light'??? what the hell is this and have I got one?

Puddle lights are fitted to some models, on the underside of the wing mirrors. Don't think pre-FL vRSes were available with them, so pretty sure you don't have them.

Here's an example. Not quite so obvious on an Octy, but basically you'll see the light outputted from underneath the mirror:

do you have em Wardy?

Yep, I do. Thought they were std fit on the Elegance or am I mistaken?

Definately haven't got anything like that which will save me 20 quid anyway, another question, the replacement mirror comes with the cover primered, how easy is it to remove this cover to get it sprayed?

Wont you need the one with indicators?

Standard fit on the L&K only I think

It probably means sprayed in a primer ready for the top coat in whatever colour you want

Also try places like Skospares for a s/hand one, you may get the right colour & save a few of your hard earned

Have you reported it to the local plod, odds are they wont find anything but you never know. We had a similar situation with damage in our area & with a pattern of reports the local plod managed to catch the scroats

Skospares link below, used them a few times a really good

http://www.skospares.com/

Thanks for the link mate, although I have tried to fill out a quote form several times and it keeps telling me theres an error!

To be honest for the sake of a few quid I think I will be better off getting a new one anyway.

I can never be bothered with the form, just use the tel number at the top

Might be worth looking at www.eurocarparts.com

I have not used them for several years, but they were OK then for a Volvo wing mirror, had to be top coated.

Pre face lift they were standard on Elegance and L&K not fitted to vRS.

Slightly OT, but yet related :D

What parts do the mirrors actually come in? I've a crack on the housing of the nearside one, and water has got into the indicator/puddle light section. Everything still functions, but it doesn't look as good as it could!

I know I'll be able to order just the mirror cover on its own, but is effectively the 'white' bit on the underside available separately, or am I looking at a complete new mirror assembly?

Doctored photo now attached, to try and illustrate

Cheers,

Steve

If its only green algy it will almost certainly clean up, toothbrush & hot soapy water & a bit of time should do it.

As to can you buy it seperately I have no idea but Skoda are better than many at selling small parts, If that was on my Nissan I would probably have to buy the whole door

.. another question, the replacement mirror comes with the cover primered, how easy is it to remove this cover to get it sprayed?

very easy - i've only done my FL mirrors but i'd guess the pre-fl is the same. a couple of clips that are easily visible and a two torqs screws then the cover comes off.

if its already primered, then adding a top coat with a rattle can is very easy - just take your time and build up the colour with multiple thin coats leaving plenty of drying time between. a couple of coats of clear on the top and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference vs. a professional job.

i've done two mirrors on previous cars (golfs) plus the cora my wife's cousin drives. Its really not hard to do.

Replacement of my powered FL mirror, with indicator repeater and puddle light ,plus side window replacement came to £456.Insurance jobbie.

I could have lived without the window replacement ,as miniscule chips only, but could not find a cheaper mirror to DIY anywhere. The black bit was a bit cracked by the impact as well.

Where are the 2 x torx screws located? did you have to remove the mirror glass?

Cheers, Lee

yes remove the mirror glass and you'll see them.

yes remove the mirror glass and you'll see them.

How do I do that without breaking it though....... :S

my method; rotate the glass so its pointing fully downwards, then pull gently down/towards yourself on the top of the glass - it just pops off.

if you break the glass you've pulled too hard ;p

Yeah, seem to be algae yes. I'll take a close up on the weekend to show, as it seems to have 'worn away' some of the inside detail on the repeater. Difficult to describe without a photo really. Which is why I was considering just replacing it.

I'll have to have a look on ETKA I think, see what's available or whether you need to buy everything together :wonder:

Cheers,

Steve

There was a thread not so long ago that included a 'Skoda Service Bulletin' on how to correctly remove the mirror glass.

It also had a step-by-step guide to removing and replacing the puddle light / LED indicator and colour coded cap.

Can't find it though - sorry.
