Where can I get a BIGGER steering wheel

Featured Replies

As in I like the wheel as low as possible, but the standard Octavia one:

(i) blocks my view of the instruments,

(ii) is not low enough to rest my knuckles on my thigh

(iii) nor indeed close enough to the door to use the armrest.

A larger wheel would solve all these difficulties at once.

The joys of being 51

Probably a silly question, but have you checked that you have the seat at it's highest setting. If not, that could solve two of your issues.

Or that the steering wheel is at its futhest reach, and lowest position...

What a thread!!! :giggle:

Simple....No

As others say, Try to adjust the seat and wheel together

Strangely, I'm with deiseldogg on this one. But I'm not sure I would like the bigger arc when wheel-twirling, so perhaps it's a reasonable compromise. If the 1.8 TSi engine wasn't so quiet I wouldn't need the instruments - I could drive by ear.

Well Doh

(i) absolutly the wheel has been tried at the limits of its adjustment, in out up down and shake it all about

(ii) despite only being 5' 10" I have reletively short legs and a longer back so unless I cut a hole in the headlining/roof I physically cannot get the seat any higher.( or remove my head)

(iii) in case some of you had not noticed the steering column is mounted at an angle therefore the furthur one extends the steering wheel the higher it rises.

Sniff!

Cheers nonetheless

PS

I fitted the Galaxy much better. or visa-versa

Can I just ask why you want to rest your knuckles on your thigh while driving? Sounds like a bit of a silly driving style :S

OK perhaps more the back of my hand than my knuckles.

But

More comfortable/ restful, better steering wheel control /stability,.

I hasten to add for "A" road dual carrigeway/motorway only.

When steering input is either not needed or very minimal

cheers

475,000 miles silly without accident or incident. Plus probably the missing 25,000 in Dads car(s) before i bought my own

so say 500,000

Hey.............it works for me.

There are a few Bus Drivers on here, maybe one of them could get you a spare from their depot ?

or you could just wrap the rim in that stuff used for tennis raquet handles, making it thicker, and therefore bigger ?

.....Til you have a blow out on the motorway with only one hand on the wheel..... :wonder:

Becasue of course everyone drives with both hands on the wheel all of the time

Why would I have a blow out??

What causes "blowouts"

I look after my tyres , do not run on remoulds, keep them correctly inflated, avoid attacking kerbs, and do not habitually drive over rubbish.

And you know I may even be experienced enough to notice when a tyre is soft, like from the handeling??

I have never had a blow out. A couple of slow punctures yes.

,And if perchance I was "forced " to drive over something that might puncture a tyre such as to cause rapid deflation I can assure you that I would be gripping the wheel firmly with both hands.

Anyway I mostly keep both hands on the wheel at 4 & 8 (ish)

Except when changing gear or picking my nose.

Anyway did anyone mention only using one hand?

Cheers

PS

Not even offended

are steering wheels getting smaller these days? or is it just the cars are growing ever larger therefore creating

the illusion that steering wheels are shrinking

I now know why you want a larger wheel:

Imagine! Hot day, sun roof open, auto gearbox, cruise control - standing on the seat with the wind in your hair...

That's the way motoring should be!

Fails to fulfill dieseldogg's requirement to rest his knuckles on is lap, unless...

dieseldogg - would resting your elbows on the roof be a suitable alternative? :D:D:D

LOL, would catch on his knees a bit though. :giggle:

I don't know about diameter but they're definitely thicker than they used to be.

I got into an old Seat Ibiza the other day, just like the one I had when I was 17, the wheel was like a piece of string in comparison to my current car.

a tempting proposition, unfortunately precluded by two essential criteria

(i) no sunroof

(ii) No hair

and erm

(iii)Tennis elbow
