Engine question

Featured Replies

Bit of help gents please;

I'm interested in buying a 2001 TDI estate, it's got 90k and a service book with a full set of stamps. It's not my first 1.9tdi and this has thrown up a few questions;

1) It drives ok, but first impression is that it lacks the stomp that the 1.9TDI has in our Fabia, it accelerates ok but not very quickly. It revs round the clock almost like a petrol engine.

2) At a standstill revving the engine revealed something strange, the revs rise ok ... but hang on for a second or so before dying down.

Before I splash the cash on this VERY attractive car ... does it have an engine problem?

90 or the 110?

Can you vag-com it for fault codes?

Poor acceleration could be down to a dodgy MAF (maybe just starting to fail). Not sure about the revs staying up, mine does not do it (noticeably, at least).

At 90k, it should have had one cambelt change (at 60k), so worth checking, if not knock off £300 to get that sorted.

On that it will be the 90BHP one

The 110BHP one was in the higher spec`d one Elegance

Thanks, the car has had the belt changed at 60k according to the service book ... and was serviced 400 miles and 12 months ago at Startins in Worcester.

Didn't know the Octy estate came in 90hp as late as 2001 ... it was registered Sept 2001.

As to the poor performance, my mate reckons the extra weight of the Octy estate plays a part, or perhaps it just needs a run to clear it out?

Thanks Sarah, so that would explain the engine being as flat as a milkman's hat?

What remap choices are there? I'm after smooth grunt rather than fireworks.

That car will have an injection pump engine rather than the PD in the fabia. The PDs generally have more torque, also the car is a good bit heavier than a fabia.

My 2001 1.9TDI Ambiente hatch is 90bhp, and the acceleration is pretty good tbh, and I rarely go above 3000rpm. I had a MAF replaced not so long ago (and a new turbo before that) - so definitely worth making sure both these are functional.

I don't know what Fabia you have but I just some a Fabia (PD100) and got a skoda estate(110). The Fabia had a big surge or grunt at around 2k rpm but had run out of puff by 3k, the octavia on the other hand has a smooth power band that runs right upto the red line. The Octavia 'feels' much slower but on the road the Fabia doesn't stand a chance of keeping up.

We have 2 Fabias, the PD100 has a PD160 intake and hauls ass right up to 3 figures - almost explosive in comparison to the Octavia.
