Are PD heads cast to match the cam clamp down fittings?

Featured Replies

Just wondered as I never knew this. Apparently the 5 camshaft clampdown parts on a PD head are cast with the head and are not meant to be changed, which can apparently lead to engine damage (they are "floating"?). Can anyone confirm this as I never knew it before. Basically, the two sets of items, head & clamps, should never be separated. I was aware piston rods are designed from new to never be separated, but not these. :)

This is correct..

They're cast, then line bored through, so even if you get the caps the wrong way or anything you could nip up the camshaft..

Fitting different caps will likely pick up the bearing and spin it..

Bugger :( Never knew that as just sold a PD head to someone without the clamp down parts and just had a phone call asking for them. Thing is I don't know which ones of the 2 sets or so I have, were from that head..... You learn something new every day.....

Is it easy to tell which clamp down parts are correct for a head if you were to offer up 2 sets on to a head? I might just send both to him in hope.

I think the wrong set would nip the cam up and make it feel tight so if he tries both he should know which one is best..

Looks like i have found the right one. Offered the same clamp fitting from the 2 sets I have to the spare head I have here (and is for sale :D) and one of them rocked side to side more noticeably, which must mean that is the clamp set from the head I sold. Oh well. At least now I know to include the other set of clamps with the head I have here, to ensure the macthing set keeps together. :)
