Turbo overhaul ideas needed.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

As a couple of you may know, I recently bought a used but functional Garrett GT1749VA turbo, otherwise known as the one for the PD130 (to be used with a set of PD150 injectors, also recently purchased!). It does need an overhaul for long-term use though, so I got in touch with Turbo Dynamics today to see if I could get a quote for refurbishing it as standard, and also to get a quote for any hybrid work they could do (more out of curiosity than anything).

This is part of the reply I got from them:

'Unfortunately, we no longer offer an overhaul / upgrade on used VNT units due to a directive released by Garrett a couple of years ago. This has also led to Garrett not supplying any parts or calibration data for this particular type of turbo.

The only thing we can offer is a new hybrid turbo which is going to come in at £845+vat for a stage 1 and £895+vat for a stage 2.'

This seems, to be honest, a hell of a steep! :S It also conflicts with other advice I was given, namely that it would possibly cost around £350 to get this done and that there are even overhaul kits on eBay. Does anybody know of anywhere that can refurbish this turbo for a reasonable sum? If it's in Scotland, that a bonus, but right now I just want more options :)

Many thanks,

Andrew

Have you tried CR Turbos to see if they can refurb / hybrid the unit???

No worries buddy, I'll do that. I have a funny feeling that the info I was given about not being able to refurb it isn't quite right! I'm also about to drop Turbo Technics an email too.

I was told by Turbo Dynamics when buying my turbo that the original could be refurbished, however they advised against it, and therefore didn't refurbish it themselves. I didn't ask why as I had my mind set on the PD150 turbo anyway.

hopefully it is incorrect or ive got a feeling ill have to raid the holiday fund and the missus aint guna be best pleased lol

I always thought that two main companies for refurbing the 1749 units were TD or CR - so I was also really surprised to read your OP...

I don't think there's an issue with turning them into Hybrid units, its refurbishing them to original spec. that is the issue as the parts are not available - that's how I understand it.

Interesting, was your original turbo a Garrett or KKK? I would do that, but the PD150 ones are just so rare now, and this one popped up reasonably local to me.

I'll be broke! :D

Not as surprised as I was when I read the email. I believe my reaction was 'Oh, bugger!'... :S

I see...shame the quotes for hybrid'ing are a few hundred quid more than I'd want to spend :(

Mine had the KKK fitted as per the norm, made a good job of destroying the internals when it went though!

Oh dear :S I have no idea what's in my PD100, all I know is that the injectors and turbo need to come out for me to hit the 170 or so bhp I'm after (with other supporting mods of course).

Just buy a TD stage 2. I've got one and not had any issues

Yeah, deffo a good excuse for going down the hybrid route

It's not quite that simple though is it!

I couldn't find half decent 150's anywhere for less than £300ish. Then even at £400 to hybrid it, might as well get a kit from unit 18, includes mapping/fitting for the extra £300. And it'll be brand new then.

I'd just go to Unit18 and get the turbo supplied, fitted and mapped in one go by one place - it's too simple  ally fitted my CR hybrid and got the mapping done - it does go well :)

Looks like I may be getting my PD130 turbo refurbed (to standard, I'm not chasing monster power) by either CR or AET, but then there's still the matter of fitting it, plus the injectors, plus the map. I was considering Unit18 for the map anyway, so that could be a shout :)
