2,0 TDI DSG tire wear

Recommended Posts

We have a 2009 140 hp DSG fwd that have a abnormal tire wear. The tires are the one that was delivered with the car from factory.

All 4 tires are about 5 mm tread depth, except for the inner 2-3 cm's of the tires, wich are more or less blank, except right rear, wich have a small amount of tread(0,5 to 1 mm). If you stroke the edge with the palm of your hand, you can feel a "stepping" in the tire.

We have had increasingly more tire noise since this spring. The winter tires shows no sign of uneven wear at all.

Last fall, changing from summer to winter tires, we did complain to our local SKODA dealer about this, they did a alignment, they said, but we did not receive any papers on it. It was a little bit out of perfect, but they adjusted it anyway, they said.

Have anyone had this problem on their cars? It has done about 48.000 km, a little bit over half of it on summer tires. First alignment about 25.000 km.

The wheels, both summer and winter, shows no sign of damage after hitting something. No cuts in the tire, no uneven or scratched rims.

BTW: It shares some suspension parts with VW touran, and I know that this was a problem that was fixed by VW. But not what was done.

This type of wear is known to be excessive toe, but I do not know what the correct alignment settings for it is.

In front it was about 1 mm total toe out, and about 1 mm total toe in at the rear.Measured with my racecar tools, quite accurate, but no laser tool.

Superb is also listed with 2 different tires, 205/55R16 and 225/45R17. Might there be different alignment settings for 205 and 225 width? My racecar needs less camber and toe with wider tires, but it is RWD.

Thanks in advance.

Ole

My tyres are wearing evenly.

I had the front tyres changed at 26,000 miles because they had worn equally down to the minimum depth. I am now on just short of 30,000 miles and the rear tyres will soon need to be replaced, but they have worn evenly across the whole tread.

I did have strange steering issues when I got the car, and it took 2 different alignment places to get it right. The last one I took it specialises in wheel alignment and they put right what another place failed to.

Try going to a alignment centre that does specialises in alignment only, rather than the skoda dealer or a tyre dealer.

On my rear summer tires 225/45/17 (I did 30.000 km on them) I can also feel a very big "stepping" on the tire especially at the edges. Front summer tires do not have the stepping so significant. The winter tires 205/55/16 (15.000km) do not have this problem at all. Besides that the tire wear is ok.

The garage said it was normal wear on the tires.

So, Skoda's policy seem to be, that if you have inside wear on the tires, it is normal, and you have to buy new tires, even if most of the tire is only half used. At least here in Norway.

I guess this will be a nice case for our AAA attorney.

Not normal at all, mine were replaced at 26,000 miles and were evenly worn across the whole tread. Still on the original rear tyres at 30,000 miles but will need replacing soon.

We replaced all 4 at 20,000 miles the fronts were borderline legal at that point , rears had around 2mm left
