Help Heater goes hot and cold without touching controls

Featured Replies

Hi

I own a Fabia tdi 1.4 2003 and have a problem with the heater, i have a intermittent fault, that

the heater comes on hot when on cold position, and also goes cold when in hot position, without touching the control knob.

when it happens the control knob does not respond, and it can last for different times.

temp gauge stay the same when it occurs.

please help

Helen

By the A/C button there's a grill thing (nearest the drivers side of the car). Under that is a sensor for the temperature in the cabin. While not proper climate control, it'll pump out air to try and maintain the temperature it's set too based on the reading this sensor gives.

Only issue is, the sensor can get dust etc on it so doesn't read properly. As a result of this the heater only responds to extremes in temperature as it loses sensitivity, hence the hot and cold output. If you hoover it out, or remove the cover/grill and blow on it/ wiper it clean you should fine it more stable in terms of output.

Failing that it might be flap motors, but the above is cheaper (well, it's free!).

Cheers .. will get hoover out and try that, lets hope it works,

it was not very nice in the summer with the heating full on with controls set to cold.

what do you mean by flap motors ?

Not entirely sure, only heard them mentioned, hence my lack of detail. I think they're used to direct the air to the different vents (rather than cables like on older cars?), and to mix the amount of hot/cold air supplied. Some people complain of only cold or hot air, and it's often down to these sticking in one position or the other. As yours are varying, I'd guess it's not those.

I could, however, be waaaaay off the mark there!
