I wish I was a woman at times, I might get more replies to my posts lol

My squeaky brake thread is dead lol

Ah.. but I never said I was a woman in my first post, and you all replied anyway. Maybe your squeaky breaks aren't exciting enough?!

;)

what's not exciting about squeaky brakes? my car sounds like an angry mouse.

Clean my own brakes? If I knew how to I would, if I let someone call me Christine will you clean my brakes for me lol

Well anyway, the garage said that something had completely corroded away on one arm, and the other was hanging loose. He isn't totally sure how hard it'll be to fix (not done this on a Skoda before) and he's getting a quote for me once he's estimated parts etc.

Maybe the guy is referring to drop Links, especially if one is hanging off ?

What does it say on the MOT failure sheet? it should list the exact details.

I don't have the MOT sheet - I dropped the car off this morning, then I spoke to the garage later on when he told me it failed. I've not been back, or heard more since. They still have the car, and the failure sheet - while they source parts and build a quote. I've not paid for anything yet, but I know that they will retest for free if it's brought back within 14 days.

Should I even dare ask what drop links are?

They connect the anti roll bar to the suspension. Not that expensive but prone to knocking.

Are they made of plastic? The guy def said something about plastic when he was describing the problem. Darn - I wish I paid more attention to the details!

lol

U sure the guy didn't say he's a spastic ? Sorry I don't like that word but hey

Where do u live ? I know a man who knows a man and he does mot tests for £80 and they usually pass ;) lol

Sure it'll be less than £300 lol prob nearer £100, can u trust this garage it might be worth going elsewhere for a re test

I also know a man of a man who charges 30-50 quid and they usually pass..

Plastic - yes well they have a plastic insert inside.

I am sure it will be droplinks, if it was the console bushes or anti-roll 'bushes hanging off' it would be totally undrivable.

Well what's the outcome, any developments ?

Car is still at the garage :(

They are ordering parts and getting a quote together. He's said they're estimating 3 hours max, and I've asked them to change the drop links and anti-roll bar bushes at the same time.

Should know more later today/tomorrow - but it looks like it's going to be in the region of £300 with MOT

Yes but what does it actually say on the MOT Failure Sheet !

Some garage that has never worked on a VW Seat or Skoda before?

£80ph for work, when your local Skoda dealer you say is £80 per hour for work, why go to someone who has no idea and never done it before? Dealers have a set time and price for each job

You know all about drop links anti roll bar bushes but not what is wrong with MOT fail ?

I smells a troll

I'm not a troll!

*sigh*

I don't know what is on the MOT sheet because I haven't seen it yet - it's still at the garage WITH the car. I'm getting the work done there because I trust this garage to not 'find' more things wrong whilst they do the work - which is something I know our Skoda dealer did with my last car!

I don't know about drop links etc - I found all that out from the helpful people on here. Plus, as I believe I already explained - the garage explained the problem to my dad, so that he could 'translate' better to me. That made understanding the advise on here a bit easier.

Anyway.. the drop links didn't arrive yesterday, and the garage is only open until 12 - so I won't get the car back until next week now.

:(

Makes driving to Bristol in 2 hours a little tricky!

So it was the Drop Links after all.

They take about 30 minutes to change on a driveway, probably less on a ramp.

Don't worry, some of us do understand what you are saying - including the facts you have picked up here.

£30 an hour in Glasgow - well I'd have to say that a few miles further East it is the normal "about £90" an hour at the VW dealer.

Ok...

So I've finally got my car back.

Failed MOT sheet says : - Nearside & offside suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.3)

Here is the breakdown of cost, including the extra bits I asked to be replaced at same time: -

Labour (4 hours) £240 (so slightly less per hour than I thought/Skoda garage)

Lower arm bushes £31.98

Anti roll bar link arms £28.78

Anti roll bar mounts £5.68

Total = £306.44

VAT = £53.64

MOT £50

TOTAL = £410.07

Will be eating stale bread and soup from now on! ;)

Thanks to everyone for your help. I know I possibly could have got it done in less hours at a Skoda place, but it's 6 and two 3's really. I might have saved £60 on labour, but I'd have paid another £50 on MOT and possibly ended up with more faults being 'found'.

:( not good, my intercooler needs replaced part of my just wants to sell up and buy a cheap £200 car and run it till it dies probably last a week with my luck

Not sure what's happening here even having read the thread again, but your car seems to have failed on 2 bushes yet you've replaced other things as well. I had two bushes replaced for about £180 at a Skoda garage...

Same as I had on an advisory last MOT.

Got them done in July so they wont fail next time. (January)

Paid my indy £150 to supply and fit the revised

4 prong bushes all in. Problem solved and a slightly

sharper feel to the steering to boot.

Did also pay £35 for a wheel alignment after the work.

Advisable after work on suspension components.

  • 3 months later...

Sadly I've had the same advisory on my car. I will be honest and say, as much as I love my Furby, I've never owned a car that requires so much constant work and I'm upset that the build quality doesn't seem to be up to the VW standard I was expecting. Car has only done 45K miles, but already has needed 4 new disks, glow plugs, cam belt, rear suspension bushes, bonnet rubbers, the seat squeaks and now the boot is also leaking (as well as a possible low rumble from the front - hopefully not the diff). I don't know if this is standard for a Skoda, but it's certainly off-putting.

VW build quality is trash anyways...

on my lupo i've done

coolant temp sensor

thermostat

heater resistor

coil pack

front wishbone bushes

thats in a month

sounds like an ideal opportunity to uprate at the same time? :) I would guess fabias are quite heavy on steering components?

I would guess fabias are quite heavy on steering components?

I don't see why they should be - I've not had suspension issues on previous cars including (going backwards) Freelander V6, Impreza Turbo, BMW 525, Citroen XM - all of which will have more load on the front. However if you take a Fabia shopping trolley designed for a 1.2l engine then put in a more powerful engine I suppose you're going to get problems...
