Problem with a Lupo

Featured Replies

Hi peeps,

I have Fabia vRS with an AmD OneClick on it, so hope to be running 170-180bhp, last night on my way home (damp conditions) I had a Lupo Gti up my a*se, so I stopped at the next set of lights, he came next to me with a smug grin, when the lights changed we both went off like rockets, to start with the Lupo had me (as I was getting massive whhelspin, right up to 4th gear!) he was around half a car length up on me, as I hit 2nd gear I did expect to start passing him (although I was still spinning) but I didn't really, I was very slowly gaining on him, any have the same problem? I feel I should be beating a 125bhp car? The only problems I encountered I felt where the traction and myself over reeving i.e the power was running out and I should of changed up earlier, cheers stu

Sure it wasn't badger's SWMBO in her new 1.8T lupo?

But traction is an issue in the wet, even for my lowly underpowered Fabia.

I doubt that! Well I dunno I reckon a 1.8T Lupo would kill me, Wouldn't see it for dust!

It might not have been standard...

The lupo is a very very nippy car... and was doing what it did best.. and standing starts aint the fabias forte. your probably running 160-170bhp and god knows what he was running... but his car is 300kg lighter than a fabia :)

you have to realise that off the line, a decent small hot hatch would kill a fabia (saxo vtr+vts, pug 106gti) and your not going to start gaining until 80mph.

It's all about how the power comes in. The furby will be in big lumps whereas the the lupo will be more across the range (I'm guess here).

The furby is heaver and lets face it in the wet the tyres are not the best in the world.

Don't be upset these things happen, and at the end of the day you never know what was under the bonnet of the lupo.

Very true, to be honest if I didn't mess the start up they would be almost identical! I feel if it was a rolling start I would of got the upper hand with the torque in the Fabia, I have test drove 2 Lupo Gti's and they feel nowhere near as fast as the Fabia,

Plans for the future are:

New Tyres (essential)

Cupra PD160 Intake pipe

Performance Panel Filter (maybe)

Lowering springs (40mm)

Would love to see the Lupo again with the following mods done, and in the dry!

If a Renault Clio 172 is quicker than a Lupo Gti and a AMD'd Fabia is quicker than the Clio 172 you work it out..

The Lupo must not of been standard.

Must of been my pants driving! I thought it was strange beacuse I held a Civic Type-R off from overtaking me!

I have test drove 2 Lupo Gti's and they feel nowhere near as fast as the Fabia,

They wouldn't - TDIs do feel fast, because of the way it delivers it's power. However, they're not as fast as they feel...

Rob.

robmawer is correct.

I used to have a 1.9i ZX.. friends all had 306 Dturbo's.... they always reckoned their cars felt faster, but on the road they could never keep pace... it's all about delivery.

Lupo GTIs are not super quick but they have a very very revvy engine with a close ratio six speed (not an economy ratio six speed like the TDI) gearbox on the later ones, and they also have aluminium panels to keep the weight down. They do drag race very well up to a point, so don't feel too disheartened!

However they would require a lot of money spent on them in mods to make them much quicker than standard as they're only N/A and they only produce 112lb ft torque so you would have them on in gear acceleration no problem and more so on the early 5 speed ones.

The Lupo GTI has some alluminium panels, no spare wheel and a sparce interior. This all adds up to a weight of about 900 kg. In all fairness it probably would be about as quick as your 1350kg Fabia vRS. Try again from 50 mph upwards and I bet it will be a different story

You it seemed like as I was catching him up, the wheelspin was immense though, I think someone should run a quarter mile with one of these Lupo's see how fast they really are!

I'm a Lupo GTI owner, well until the Fabia VRS arrives in March. From the very brief test drive I had in the Fabia VRS, I'd say it does feel quicker than the Lupo, especially in-gear acceleration wise. Do like the Lupo ... averages 39 mpg, but the boots an issue for me. Also, its not the quietest of cars for motorway use, hoping the Fabia will be a bit more refined...should be.

If your wheel spinning how do you expect to be faster than a car with traction?

Sounds like you need some practice young padawan learner.

Thankyou Jedi Skoda Master, had a Astra SRI (although not as fast as a Lupo) today in pretty much the same position only in the dry and he was a dot in the distance, may of mastered the technique
