KMH display CAN be changed to MPH

Featured Replies

I found this thread on the Octavia II forum!!!

You have to set the car's country to be Saudi and voila you get this:

James @ Allams: I think this is something I'd like to have done on your open day once you have it! You did suggest someone will be on hand to do things to our cars with a laptop!

That's pretty cool. Been wondering how to do it for a while. I wonder why there is a USA model on there, I suppose it's for the VW and Audi models that go over there.

I wonder if anything else changes when you change the car to Saudi spec, maybe the nav trys to make you face Mecca every few hours.

hehehe oh that is funny!

Ignore the email I just sent you! You saw this pronto!

Aye, that's my Octy. I'd steer away from the Saudi setting though, it triggers a speed warning at 74mph which cannot be turned off!

Recoded it today to Australia and that's sorted it.

The USA setting also works but that triggers a warning if the drivers door is opened whilst the engine is running.

Keith: I'm glad there are people out there experimenting like this! Then the rest of us can just follow! Australia it is then! I like the idea of a Snow Monster with an Australian heart!

You could try Ireland too:D

In a CAR magazine test recently they showed a UK Polo GTI from inside (if memory serves) and that had this big MPH display in the middle... So you can get a UK car (albeit a VW) to show this...

Remember you will need to code it back to UK before getting any dealer work done otherwise they may well void the warranty. You'll also need to code it before travelling to Eire or another EU country since they use KMH and you cannot switch between KMH/MPH for the secondary speed and not having a KMH speedo in the EU is illegal.

I'd wager to say you are wrong on first point as very many people fiddle with these settings and have never had issues with dealers.

As to km/h settings click on the original link again and see the new posts there. When you switch this big mph display off the km/h display returns to the same spot as you have it now. Small and at the bottom. So no problem driving in km/h countries.

I've just had a quick look and I can't find the option to change country - just the language.

I'm also a little confused why Australia has the option for Mph at all, as all the distances and speed limits are in Km and have been since 1974?!

I believe it is through VCDS (ref first post on the Octy Forum) not just Maxidot? If so then it's not quite as straightforward as it sounds. Do the roo's not still measure in MPH - I don't think they ever quite caught on

Yes you can switch between them. It's now switchable in the Maxidot menu. No recoding is required.

I think they use KM/h but it doesnt matter either way. Whatever country your coded to, you still have the option (in Maxidot) to switch units between KM and Miles. And yes your correct in saying you need VCDS/VAGCOM to code it initially.

I'm sure it's me but I don't follow what's being said here.

Maxidot can't switch between KmH and MPH on the default setting of a UK car - correct?

But if you use one of the software tools to change the country setting to eg Australia then the option to switch KmH/MPH via Maxidot is now activated?

But you still have to drive around with the incorrect country setting for this Maxidot option to remain active? Or are you suggesting that once a change eg to Australia has been made to activate the KmH/MPH switch, it still remains active even if you switch the country back to UK?

To answer: yes and yes and the car has to stay in the different country for this to work. That is the whole point of this thread.
