Dilemma

Featured Replies

My diesel ford focus is on its last legs, so I'm after a 2-3 year old Octavia.

I would still like a diesel having owned one for 7 years, however, in those 7 years I've had the intercooler, DMF & clutch, amongst other things, replaced.

I'm currently driving a 40 mile trip to work (averaging around 50mph with the odd dual carriage way) which, sometime next year, will change to 12 mile journey (average 60mpg).

I've read the forums and have heard issues of the DPF on the diesels. With the smaller journey will this likely cause any issues with the DPF? Or am I better off getting a 1.8 TSI Petrol?

Also has anyone experienced any DMF problems with their diesels?

Thanks

Dave

If you were doing 5 miles each way, fair enough but 10 will be OK. People only post up about problems and needing advice, so it seems as if every car is affected, not so ,just your perception

My understanding of it is that so long as the car gets a occasional long journey you shouldn't really have many DPF issues, I'm certainly hoping that is the case. 12 miles each way shouldn't be a issue. My new car is lucky to do more than 4 miles per day Mon-Fri but most weekends it will get to stretch its legs a bit more.

if you're doing short journeys avoid the DPF. Occasionally i do the School run for a week. 2 x 3 mile journeys a day + ferrying kiddies to after school activites etc. & the DPF will be regenerating by thursday & then it'll need a blast of 10miles or so @2000 rpm to clear.

Dealer called me about 2 years ago for a replacement sensor & engine re-map due to DPF 'issues' & things are better than they were

Mon - Fri my car car just does two 2 mile trips each day, but usually a bit more, eg two 25 mile trips at weekends, with some (extra) long trips thrown in as well. The DPF light hasn't come on yet over the 9 months/10,000 miles.

Mine is a CR though.

I may be wrong but I do not think the 1.8 TSI is available in 2 to 3 year old Octavias. I think this engine was introduced about 1 year ago.

I used to run a PD VRS (now have a CR VRS) and did 10 miles each way to work each day on a mix of motorway/A/B roads (so very similar to your lower mileage route) and had no issues with the DPF.

Great, thanks for confirming the DPF stuff. Looks like I should be ok with the 2.0l TDI PD. Just need to find a decent used one ;)

The PD140 doesn't have a DPF.

Good luck with the search.

My mistake, I thought all of the 2.0 PD engines do. So what models do have the DPF?

Will I have a problem with my new commute of 5 miles each way daily then?

Hope not!

PD170 (vRS) does have a DPF

PD140 doesn't

IIRC, all CR engine have it?

1.8 TSI in Octavia was introduced at the end of 2007, so it should be available.

Not quite....

PD 140 4x4 has it

PD 140 Scout has it

PD 140 Clasic, Ambiente, Elegance, L&K doesn't have it.

Just going to say my PD 140 Scout definitely does have a DPF...

Which engine code do the PD140 Scout and 4x4 have?

Well mine is 2009 FL 140 PD and i could choose DPF. I chose without DPF B). Without DPF engines have 16 valves and DPF 8. You cold find out using that info.....

Lucky you. In the UK we had no choice, 8V DPF.

Think the diesel Scout is now only available in CR?

Yes I think now every model in UK is DPF. Here In my country DPF is only sold in L&K Octavia. Like Iwould pay extra for it anyway
