No power to standard radio?

Featured Replies

Hi. Picked up my fabia today and the owner had an aftermarket headunit which was working.

He swapped it back for the original but I can't turn it on?

Anything special I might have missed or not maybe connected right?

You usually have to swap the permanent live and ignition live wires round when you are fitting an aftermarket stereo. Maybe they are still crossed.

CHeck the fuse too.

Yeah, the switched and permanent live wires need switching over on the loom (funny VW thing) - should be a guide on here somewhere, unless the previous owner used an adaptor, which you can just remove...

The wires are red and yellow by the way.

Wires arre usually in the radios loom with bullet connectors I thought, so not normally need to change the cars own wiring.

The fuse in the back of the HU ok? Got on in another car you can try? Does it light up when the headlamps are turned on - might not be wired in (at all?) properly.

+1 most aftermarket stereos have the switchable connections in their own loom.

thanks for the replies.

Where abouts should i be looking then to switch these wires over?

The multi-pin connector that goes into the back of the HU. First check there isn't an adaptor already fitted (just remove it if there is), and if there isn't, pull the yellow and red wires out of the connector and swap them round. You may also find an aerial booster has been fiited, which your stock HU won't need - that can go too... :)

I use a pair of electric planer blades personally but they are very sharp so I've wrapped the ends in

insulating tape. I understand Kenwood keys will also work, I have also heard that a junior hack saw blade

snapped in half will do the bizzo too. If you're really stuck pop to your local dealer with your logbook and they might

do it for you. It only takes a second with the right kit.

halfords do sell the keys i just replaced my cassette for an aftermarket cd player the keys are the european type the same ones used for audi and vw and will work on the skoda its just not easy ask the halfords technician they remove and install these things all the time i had to removed all my surrounding fascia and had to pull the little pocket thing out from underneath the stereo to get it out i still ended up cutting my fingers a bit though weird thing is it worked for about a week but then after stalling my car the head unit now has no power supply im going to rewire its power source from the cigarette lighter socket with an on/off switch seems easier to me than fault finding the fuse is fine it just aint getting power im taking the easy route lol good luck.
