Door mirrors. Do they clear when raining?

Featured Replies

To those of you who have had the pleasure of driving a Yeti in the rain.

Do the door mirrors stay covered in rain, or do they clear when you are driving?

My BMW's were great and they cleared when you were driving, but my octavia was terrible, they did not clear at all, so it was quite hard to see through them in the rain, far worse at night in the rain....

Mike

Main issue is rain running across the side window cutting out the view of the wing mirror, however an application of RainX resoles this.

By that do you mean that the mirrors clear themselves - the aerodynamics are better than the octavia's at clearing the rain off the glass?

My polo and octavia before it suffered from rain running across the window. Will try that RainX tip though.

Hi Mike,

have no problem with the mirrors on mine anyway, just the side windows.

Just flick the heated mirror switch

Not just Skoda this happens with.

Works Mondeo is appalling for viewing the mirror in the rain due to water tracking across the window. Much worse than our Mk2 Octavia IMO.

It works up to a point.

Best way though is well designed mirror shell so that the aerodynamics clear the rain off.

  • 1 year later...

I found the exact same going up the Lake District last month with rain scooting across the window from the windscreen. It was plain dangerous as I couldn't see what was in the lane I was pulling into on the motorway.

I'm going to put a mod on the car - just a 10cm strip of black right angled plastic, to hopefully deflect the wind (and rain) out from the window slightly... Will also try RainX. Does it work?

Haven't some owners fitted the air-deflectors to the doors to solve this issue?

EDIT added the below thread about air deflectors

Not a yeti but I've always suffered the same problem. My heated mirrors is great for clearing the rain but leaves unsightly and view obscuring watermarks.

Anyone got a less than heath robinson method for getting airflow over a mirror?

Never found a problem with the mirrors being covered in water, and as has been said, a wipe of a RainX type product on the side windows stops any problems there.

(Which reminds me, must do them again!)

Agreed. RainX works very well. Only problem I had when applying it was smearing but reread the instructions and tried a damp cloth, result.

I use it on the side windows very effectively, but not the windscreen. I find that (as has been reported by others here) it can cause flare from the headlamps of oncoming vehicles at night once the wipers have been in use for a couple of days. For the front screen, I prefer just nice clean glass!

I use the Halfords equivalent and haven't noticed that problem.

What do you use to clean the inside of the windscreen without leaving streaks?

I just use a clean but well used auto glym chammy, regularly rinsed out in a plain old bucket of cold water for the inside glass.

RainX on the outside excpt the front; find the wiper blades judder. If the front needs a proper clean then auto glym glass polish.

Whatever Glass Cleaner is in the cupboard at work, and a white muslin cloth, also from the same cupboard. B)

I asked the queston because I use car polish on the inside of the windscreen (the stuff that goes white when it dries) and I was wondering if there is anything that would produce a similar non-strreak finish.

Auto glym glass polish

 plus I also use Auto Glym Fast Glass

Was caught in heavy rain today, the problem is the water running across the window ruining vision onto mirror. The mirror itself was clear. I wonder if those clear plastic strips that clip onto door would solve problem.

I would say it depends greatly on the speed at which you are driving. Drive fast enough and the water starts to go upwards across the side windows ... :giggle:
