90,000 miles for the mongrel!

Featured Replies

The mileage passed 97,360 this week, which means the mongrel has done 90,000 miles since the original engine work, etc - done in 2005.

I would like to say it has never missed a beat, but nothing has gone wrong that hasn't been my own doing :D

What work was done in 2005? Nice to read some + feedback

PD130 engine conversion, and stage 2 hybrid fitted. Ran that at 220bhp for a couple of years, then a bigger hybrid @ 250 odd for a couple of years, and since that popped on the Nurburgring, now have a 2260vk turbo (stock0 from Audi A7 3.0 TDI and pushing for 300bhp.

whats the lag like on the 2260vk?

At the moment bad because I don't think the stopscrew is setup correctly and the turbo is too "open" on low revs / idle. It needs to be more closed to encourage low boost. It should boost even lower/harder than a stock pd130 turbo. At the moment if I floor it in 3rd gear @ 1500 revs there is nothing initially, then about 0.5 bar at 1800rpm then a bar at just over 2000 then up to 2 bar+ by 2500 revs.

Well impressed Jason.

Mind you I think I ate my hat on this car a long time ago, still remember shuddering at some aspects of the conversion years ago, but just goes to show.

Well done Jason, congrats

What clutch ya got? :)

spec stage 3 if its still the same ,i still to this day remember the idle chatter of the single mass lol

3+ :D The + is what makes it a bit stronger than just the 3

Ross - I agree some of the earlier aspects of the conversion were a bit dodgy, but things have been ironed out over the years and now I think it's about as reliable as a normal fabia vRS. Just have to keep on top of the essential maintenance.

Still not sure how I am still on stock engine mounts though. :D PD100 ones at that. :D

LOL pd100 mounts FTW! so whats to stop this being as popular mod as using a TD stage 2....after all im assuming thats a stock turbo and is designed for those kind of output as apposed to a hybrid which isnt really?

"Stock" turbos are why I am never likely to go for anything hybrid again in the future. Stock turbos FTW! :D

Well done Jas. Really is credit to you.

Still waiting for the big roof conversion :(

Big roof conversion....

Im not tempted to go for the 3.0 tdi turbo knowing what kinda of power you can make and it be designed for it, without compromising too much lag :D 300 RBHP (reliable break horse power lol) sounds good to me :D

Yeah, the GTB2260vk is good value for money, but the costs to get it mounted right / pipework sorted, etc probably amount to the cost of the turbo again, if not more.

ah so its not a direct fit like the hybrid...thus it being less popular - had a feeling there was a catch... :(

No - but thats part of the fun :D and I like having a stock turbo with so much potential too.

haha was it just a case of re-creating a new manifold and exhaust then or is there more to it than that, cos to me that would see a good excuse to get a tubular manifold :p haha :giggle:

It is a case of that, and Jabba may well sell a cast manifold to you, suitable for GT22 use. I know they use it on their GT25 conversion.

my vnt20 hybrid is similar!

jack all before 1800rpm

need to drive it a gear lower or its sdi power

hmmm cast is strong, but my mates a dab handy at making stuff like that, would love a tubular one on mine, see if it makes a difference and im a bit of an engine bay perv sometimes haha. then get him to make me a big old straight through for the exhaust....yummmy....think I may look into this a bit more as the clutch wont be long. Will I need to uprate the injectors or cams to take full advantage or is it just clutch, FMIC and the above (and mapping obv)?

GTB2260VK + 1.6 Golf manifold works..........

Oil lines fit, you need a flange for the downpipe, and then to sort out the intercooler and turbo intake pipe out.

I'm making the swap around Christmas time, on a shoe string budget, so I'll let you know how I get on.

yes you'll need uprated nozzle's as the standard ones are only good for 220/230bhp

and i have a diblias cam in mine.... unsure if devonutopia has one?
