Rear Suspension Problems.

Featured Replies

Has anyone here had any problems with bits of the rear suspension collapsing?

I only ask cos it happened to me last weekend, was travelling round an extremely gentle right hand bend at about 55 (my mate did it at 110+ the other month to give you an idea of how bad it isnt) and all of a sudden the rear end snapped out on the exit of the corner. Managed to get it under control again only for it to happen again on the straight road afterwards sending the car into a brick wall - probable write off. After I got out the wall, i noticed the rear wheel had massive positive camber and massive toe out as you can see in the picture. There was no understeer or dodgy handling before the accident and neither myself or the two policemen who arrived at the scene (top blokes) could see any diesel, oil, mud or any other culprits on the road, although it is more than likely as it doesn't take much these days.

Any ideas of what has happened I'd appreciate also, the missus has a Leon Cupra and as theyre the same chassis I want to make sure the same doesn't happen to her car.

Thanks in advance.

christ! looks nasty!

any shots of the actual wheel? to get a better idea

Afraid I have no shots of the actual wheel, it was only cos the missus, who turned up later and started taking the ****, mentioned I should get some pictures I got that and 3 others. Shock has funny effects on you doesn't it.

I was wondering if there were any potential problems with the rear tie-rods. I seem to recall problems with the A3's and Golfs a few years back, and recalls????

As far as the damage goes, it's all cosmetic, bonnet, wings, bumper, front valance, all bolt on items. As an idea, the FMIC is still intact. The radiator however..........

Couldn't get under the car to see the rear suspension as it had collapsed against the exhaust near enough.

Not that I'd do it but at least drink driving isn't going to be anything to worry about for a while.........she's got to drive. :D

bit of a state that mate, gonna be a big bill.

what with bumper, wings, bonnet, strut type beam things, possible wheels, suspension, airbags, dash, seat airbags?(the seats are around

the vRS doesnt have seat airbags as standard, and the pics seem to show it. I have seen pics of another silver vRS that was damaged in a simillar way and this was repaired by the insurance company. Took a long time though if I remember, the biggest problem was getting the new dash part and the airbags.

wasnt the tie rod thing on the 4wd cars? TT etc? they have a diff rear set up?

are you running std susp or uprated? would sound like a dislocated spring / snapped spring...

you can just make out the angle of the rear wheel in the first pic, scary to say the least! atleast your ok and all

Spot on mate, the vRS has a solid rear beam axle that is very simple, never seen one fail at all, be very interested in what has actually failed on this car, as would Skoda I feel.

I really can't remember what the rear suspension setup is like at all. Haven't got round to getting my mates on the ramp yet.

That rear wheel definately caused the car's rear end to snatch to the left after I got it going straight again and caused it to stack, wet grass on mud doesnt help braking much at all. The irony is that if the car was a "jump" to the right it would have ended up on someones large tarmac drive.....DOH! Still, have to wait and see what the insurance company say after they've finished dragging their heels. 1 1/2 weeks on and still no courtesy car.....Elephant rocks. :finger:

Fingers crossed they'll fix it but I'm not holding my breath.

I came out of it with just my pride in tatters. Funny enough no injuries at all.

Thanks for the input up to now guys, no doubt others will have something to say and I'll look forward to reading.

Till then, take care and have lots of fun with your cars, jammy sods. :D

surely they can't refuse to repair it more of an arguement about blame

  • Author

Only me involved, no one else at all so I don't think blames an issue as far as they go.

It's probably the assessor being bogged down with work with all the accidents round here, the roads are ****e. Probably be a write off to be honest which means they will try to give me as little as possible, claiming the car was in poor condition before the accident. Still, here's hoping........

Someone was looking for a rear seat squab, if you fancy doing a swap ;)

Looks bad, are both springs intact?

  • Author

Don't think I can get at the car now. No idea what the springs are like. Looking at the wheel, I think the springs might be the least of the worries with the rear suspension, don't know though.

If it is a write off, I may buy it back and break it down and flog bits to try and help finance a new car. :(

If I did I will have the following out of it:

Remapped ECU

FMIC minus crash bar (

*waits for jason to appear asking if the engine can be bodged into a fabia...with the intercooler....and all*

;)
