boost leak?

Featured Replies

When I rev my engine I hear air from the drivers side, well my wife noticed it last night.

Will it be my boost pipes came off? Don't notice a loss in power so doubt it's that :(

Hi Chris,

Are you sure its not just the noise of the turbo spooling up? Sounds a little like air wooshing up and pressurising

Was told at the rolling road meet I was at it sounded like air escaping, is the turbo next to the intercooler?

Does sound like sshhh type noise

Not sure on your engine mate, could you get someone to rev the engine from in the car and you to have a nose around to see if you can hear or see anything

It's on 95k and remapped 500 miles ago so could be a small leak in the pipe and it's ready to pop off :(

Been told it's a bumper off job to fix too

A friend of a friend who works as a Skoda mechanic is going to have a quick look at 1pm I'll let you know what he says

for standard pipwork - you shouldnt need to remove the bumper...a headlamp maybe or even jack it up and get underneath, but shouldnt really be anything you need to take the bumper off for unless you are actually replacing or wanting to get to the core of the intercooler, and even then it can be got at by removing the wheel & arch lining albeit a little tight.

Is the car giving off more smoke? Does it get more noticeable/louder under load? Made sure its not the VAC box (black box on the top left under the bonnet - i.e. the clip on the front is on securely?

Yes it's smoking more than most did at the RR meet, was meant to male 180 but was nearer 160 I'll check the vac box now.

My mates not looking at the car till tomorrow night

Deffinately sounds like a boost leak....the OEM pipes have a tendancy to sort of come undone at one side so there still in and making boost but you lost a noticeable amount....if you've checked the one that goes into the EGR valve, follow that down the side of the engine to behind the drivers headlamp and make sure all the joins are flat and flush. If you've dont this its and not spotted anything then its more than likely underneath. you'll need to remove the undertray if you havent already, (jack it up on some axel stands first). Once you've done this and you are under the car, looking directly under where you were looking at the intercooler above you should be able to see the pipework continue below, again check the seals, this should run along side the oil sump before going up to the turbo...also check for traces of soot/sludge around the joins as it could also be the rubber seal thats not doing its job.

It needs a new intercooler :( good excuse to get a seat sport one I think

indeed but remember thats not a cheap job and if your budgets tight replacing it will always work out cheaper. you will probs be looking around 500+ for a seat sport...then youll probably have to pay someone to fit it.

Me and a few other members have gone down the custom FMIC route which works out drastically cheaper....mine come to a grand total of £300 for the cooler, full stainless pipework and labour...but i got it all at cost plus mates rates...but even so, other members are sceptical about this and only reccomend forge/seat sport ones....personally I dont see the issues as it still has a larger surface area and so long as its not got like 2 cores lol, it should be pretty capable of doing the job.

If I can get a 2nd hand seat intercooler for £125 and the pipework for £175ish I'll consider it, but £300 fitted for a standard one is a bit pricey.

Will a broken intercooler be the reason it's smoking alot more than usual?

Yea. Some of the pressurised air provided by the turbo is escaping, but the ECU is feeding in the amount of fuel it thinks is needed for the full charge of air...

If you can find a Seat sport for that price and manage to be the first to buy it you've done exceptionally well...then for someone to make you all the pipework and fit it for £175 again would be pretty good.

EDIT: note just so ppl dont think im lazy or a scrubber lol I cleaned the bay up a bit since then -

how many hours labour would it be to fit it? This has made me so depressed, only had the car a few weeks I'm gutted

Do you know for certain it's the intercooler? I can't comment on your friend's knowledge, but other than some truly unlucky stone damage I can't think of any reason that the I/C would fail in preference to the pipework...

He said it was rubbing off of something, I'm getting a 2nd opinion from a Skoda mechanic tomorrow it's a friend of a friend.

If I do go down the fmic route would I need the egr delete kit too?

Take it I'm safe to drive with my intercooler hissing? I might upgrade my AA membership to include repairs

Rubbing? On what? Sounds more and more like the seal's gone on one of the pipe ends. Could be wrong, but I can't honestly think what it would rub on...

  • Author

I hope your rite, the guy who looked at it works on most skoda taxis. It's hissing pretty loud I thought it was just the turbo.

Spoke to my wife looks like we can't afford the fmic option will just be a 2nd hand intercooler from eBay if it actually needs one :(

to be honest, its not a cheap do, replacing the side mount (if that is whats actually at fault) makes more sense for the time being.

But as said by ap0gee its rare for the FMIC to go, usually the pipes to give up first.

Ill see if I still have my old side mount - left it at my mates when we put the new setup on...if i have it still you have have it for the cost of a courier to send it to you.

That would be excellent :) was considering using my rent money to fix the car and dealing with that later.

I looked on eBay can't see one, unless the seats or vw's use the same one?

I'll know for sure tomorrow night when the Skoda mechanic looks over it, he seems nice and trustworthy, I will just replace the side mount it makes sense but only if I get one 2nd hand coz been quoted £250 new and £50 fitted

i think you should try this

£334 - pass

fmic kit 500 onwards

i think its a cool wee set up

no faffing on with boost pipes just whack it in

and it has a part for water meth injection

:)

Jase I'd rather get a 2nd hand fmic than pay that.

See a few side mount ones on eBay but say there for an a3 1.9tdi and octavia says nothing about the fabia
