increased noise after cam belt change

Featured Replies

Hi

The water pump on my pd 130 octavia (2004) failed and i had to have 3rd cambelt fitted - at around 110k.

Garage sensibly advised putting on a new one even tho the old one went on at c. 80k.

Car now at 120k and is increasingly noisy - and has been on the latest belt.

Garage - who are very reliable and trustworth and experienced - had a devil of a job getting at the water pump - needing to remove or loosen more than one engine mount.

and i have a sneaky feeling that the engine never returned to its original position - i sent it back in and they loosened the mounts and allowed the engine to find its own position before tightening down.

It just seems to have turned in to a tractor since this work - although mpg and performance seem pretty unaffected although car is very sluggish when cold - behaving as if it has an anchor dragging behind it.

And no problems with brakes.

I don't think any of the loosened mounts had their bolts replaced.

Any members come across this one - or any suggestions for any other maintenance checks at this mileage that might account for it?

thanks

John

Are you SURE the timing was set correctly when they put the new belt on... :S

Are you SURE the timing was set correctly when they put the new belt on... :S

......................Er No. ........i did ask them about this though they implied that a pd engine simply wouldn't run if the timing was out. I've no way of contradicting them though.

I have noticed that - very occasionally - the engine gives an odd cough when it first fires up.................and then settles down to its regular tickover.

Is timing something that can be shown numericallly if a VAG computer is plugged in - please excuse my ignorance here.

thanks

Yeah, I think so. Could be a few things, but the fact it came on after having a new cambelt fitted points towards that...
