Hi, Just bought my VRS - but what fuel should i use

Featured Replies

Hi,

Ive just feel in love with my car and want to treat her right ;)

so i'm wondering what fuel i should be using, so far ive tried..

standard unleaded (95 ron)

optimax (98 i think  )

and Esso's cleaner performance thingy (97 ron)

i noticed a huge difference with the Optimax on economy down by at least 4 mpg, overall i feel the esso has worked best for me, good mpg (always +30) and good performance  .

but hearing all claims of unburned detergents and stuff have made me wonder what seems to be performing the best, also ive heared scarry reports of the damage that Optimax has caused with blown pistons etc... :thumbdwn: not good.

any comments..

cheers

Asuming it is an octavia - 98 should work better in threoy and do better mpg. I run a Volvo T5 and that certainly enjoys a bit of the old 98 over 97. However my car is mapped to 98 ron.

my advise would be 95 ron non supermarket fuels. Esso/shell/total etc 95 ron. Save's you lots of money and no octane will improve the econamy that much to justify the extra cost. The performance may alter but it is fractional.

I'd agree with that comment. Of all the fuels I've tried, which is basically all of them, the Esso Supreme is definitely the best. Better economy by about 10%, car feels better, and the quality seems consistently high. And it's only about 82p per litre instead of 90p for Optimax.

Currently running the octy on 95 ron fuel ala esso. Usually I use Sainsburys 95 ron, and very rarely use anything else. The car is remapped for 95 ron.

thanks for the reply's

and nice cars, ..... mannyo what do you use to clean your seats??

Hello and Welcome:D

i swap between using Esso Supreme and Optimax, and if i put 95ron in it i use Shell or Esso as those are the garages on my route to work.

Have fun and enjoy, are you gonna do any mods???

i'm considering mods at the moment.....

i want to hold off on the RR & Remap until i addon some titbits, so i can take full advantage of tune, ideally i'd like to travel down to Jabba but 300 miles ..mmm.. its gona be a long day.

how do you rate the mods you chose "WrightyRS"

i would agree with putting some of the other mods on before you have a re-map,

i would say go for a DumpValve,Full Exhaust(100CEL CAT+CAT Back System)FMIC(Jabba)and the Samco Tip.

you will feel a difference with these items,ok its the best part of 2 grand then your remap/boost controller on top but you should see 250bhp and it will feel like a different car.

but before all that put the uprated Anti-Roll Bars on,R32 Golf Front and the 28mm Adjustable Nuespeed Rear ARB and it will remove the understeer.

you can spend alot of money, well i have, over

have used nothing but optimax in both my octy vRS'. where did you hear about optimax problems etc as i have not heard about this ?

I've only ever used Optimax in the Rover, as that runs higher than standard boost and therefore (I was led to believe) the higher octane fuel was safer i.e. less chance of pistons overheating.

Just put the first tank of fuel in the Octy today and that was Optimax.

Where did you hear about these problems

Just a little voice of opinion. Dump valves aren't particually good news. They have the potential to cause an array of issues with airleaks and or over boosting. The standard recirculation valve is fine for running daily use power.

The Optimax issue was pointed out to me by a local Mechanic just before i bought my car, he had the heart of a TT lying on his bench at the time and pointed out the damage, i'd be kidding myself on if i tried to recall the exact technical explanation, the owner had only ever used optimax from new and this was highlighted as the fault, although at the time nobody was taking the blame, i think the milage was around the 26k mark,

I'll be over asking him more about the details later this week and post an update back, but if anyone has had any similar problems it would be good to know.

cheers
