2005/05 MK2 OCTAVIA Tdi PD 'INDUCTION' NOISE

Featured Replies

Help as I'm about to drive my car into the river!!

I have a mk2 (2005/05) Octy Tdi PD which I use as a taxi, a car which until recently I have loved to bits, note the RECENTLY BIT!! When accelerating between 1800 - 2300 rpm at anything over granny pace there is a noise which has been described by 3 local knowledgeable garages, and a Skoda dealer (rarely knowledgeable, in my experience)as 'induction noise'. They have tried removing and changing the air induction box (attached to grill) and the pipe which connects to air filter housing, with no luck, air filter box also changed) Indeed, after a recent altercation with a drink - driver these parts were all replaced with the noise still remaining! The pipes have been removed all way up to air flow meter and car test driven without it affecting the noise! Even tried taking bottom engine cover off to see if it was that vibrating! If you drive EXTREMELY GENTLY the noise isnt there, but the slightest squeeze on accelerator and it returns. i am really starting to pull my hbair out now as I spend a lot of time in my car and take a great deal of pride in its condition and maintenance.

The clutch was recently changed and converted to SMF and any turbo problems have been ruled out.

I am also looking for a reliable breakers in the North (East preferably) and a independent specialist who maybe able to repair above / future faults. Prefer Newcastle upon Tyne or local area, only if you have experience of garage or good recommendations!

THANKS ALL!!

Had the very same prob with my previous car, turned out to be a split intercooler matrix.

The garage had to put the car onto a rolling road and introduce a coloured smoke into the engine air intake, then rev the engine and watch where it came out!

In my case the leak only became apparent at about 1800-2000 rpm and made one hell of a noise!

Everybody just seems to say 'its got a noise, some cars do'. I prefer to have it as it should be, but no one can agree on the cause! Did you get your diagnosis at Skoda? No one seems to pinpoint exact fault and after a less than satisfactory incident with local dealer, I would prefer to avoid them! Would your octy do it when stationery, as my car only seems to make noise when moving, revving when stationary fails to cause the vibrating noise to occur. At first, i thought it sounded like exhaust bracket missing, or a gasket but now its definitely a resonating sound. Even checked mounts etc, but its really starting to become an issue as it occurs in the gear changing rev range. What was the diagnosis / repair costs?

REGARDS

Had this on an LT van three times-cracked intercooler replaced under warranty each time. Probably something to do with a remap I had done when the van was an overloaded 4 tonne mobile showroom & pushing out 206bhp & 360 ftlb of torque (dyno proven) :giggle: Noise only under load 'cos crack only opened up under pressure. Have you noticed any loss of power or excessive smoke?

I definitely dont think mine suffers from lack of power, pulls like a train (leaves Mondeo TDci 135s standing!) Smokes a little under strong acceleration but not really under normal driving conditions. My local garage just say its got a resonating noise and no other symptoms that would point to intercooler. Noise has got worse in recent months and although car has 120k on, its been thoroughly serviced always with genuine components. Getting bit concerning now that no-one locally seems to be able to pinpoint fault and suggest cure!

Surely that's the methodology there for pinpointing the elusive fault?

I guess you just need to find someone with the nous and facilities to do it!?

Methodology maybe, but not sure where to start looking for someone with nous and facilities! The common answer I get is 'its just a noise, some cars have them!'. Hardly a satisfactory diagnosis from a Dealer?

Perhaps a daft question, given that you seem to have covered all the logical bases, but have you had a diagnostics scan run when it was at the dealers. Just wondered whether anything might have been flagged up there, with something not running quite right, or being configured properly....

The car was given an all clear. They ran a car scan and it was clear. I myself have a decent quality VAG code reader and it always comes up with no faults!

Mine was on my previous car a X type 2.0tdci and yes, you could hear it when stationary if you floored the throttle.

funnily though, it never had any loss of performance and no warning lights , just a noise like a garage air line bl;owing off.

The test the did with the coloured smoke is a often used method I belive.

My Octy 170pd VRS makes no induction noise at all.

It all depends on the car, my current one makes no noise like that, however my previous Fabia vRS made the same induction roar at about the same speed but only under load, i.e. accelerating the car with the right foot to the floor. It is the noise of the air being pushed through the air intake at high pressure due to the turbo providing full boost. If it is really concerning you then I agree with the guys above, take off the inlet trunking from the outlet of the turbo to the inlet manifold and inspect the pipework for any collapsing or delamination of the interior of the pipes. If they all look OK then the next port of call is the intercooler and the air filter.

Thanks for advice, will check trunking tomorrow. I am getting a noticeable whistle from turbo recently but not sure if this has increased or not since noticing the current fault. Going to change the air intake box and downpipe tomorrow and change air filter (less than few months old but will check anyway.) They did change the design of these early into the production of the MK2 Octy and I replaced mine with the newer design as previous type were no longer supplied by VAG. I have changed this once before but they never seem to be a good fitting item. Next one will be super glued before fitment to car. The MK1 octy did have problems with the airbox which was often cured by stuffing tennis balls underneath it!! Not my style, the Octys are great cars and like mine to be right.

Just had check up by second local Skoda Dealer. They have located the sound as coming from rear of engine / bulkhead area. They suggested leaving the car with them for a week so they could use a trial and error method of finding fault via 'trial and error' method. The sound seems to be a hard plastic pipe or component rattling during the certain rev range. Decided to leave car with local vw knowledgeable garage who will attempt same method, at a much cheaper rate. Suggestions of maybe trunking not being secured correctly or a badly routed pipe or bracket. As it only works under load, ie when car is being driven, it maybe a bit of a task!
