Talk to me about rooting

Featured Replies

I've finally run out of space on the desire, so the next step is to root it.

Anyone got an idiots guide etc.

check out the one click process described at http://androidforums.com

About to run out myself.

I've finally run out of space on the desire, so the next step is to root it.

I got the low disk space icon yesterday (3.5gb free out of 4gb :S) and it wouldn't auto connect to google so the only way to sort it was a factory reset + re-install.

Does your computer show two seperate drive id's on the phone as mine only shows one even though it has the 4gb sd card in?

To root the phone use unrevoked but if you are trying to create more space on the phone then just rooting won't help, you need to use AP2SD+ which means a new ROM too or following this guide here to move apps to the SD and install new ones to the SD card by default. Some apps won't work properly on the SD card though but it doesn't need your desie to be rooted...

Lol looks easy enough

Rooting is a one-click process these days and that's the easy bit.

You then want to get yourself a custom ROM with A2SD enabled. A not about A2SD is that you will still eat into your internal storage although not as much but I found myself running out of storage after about 80 apps installed and then that's when I changed the system partitions around to give more room for apps.

I now have 119 apps installed and still have 83.96mb of storage space!

Other advantages of rooting are under/over clocking and undervolting CPU. I also use Leedroid ROM for which there is a GPU patch that increased 3D performance for games.

If you get stuck then ask away here I'm sure we can help.

Definately have a look at XDA Devs though... loads of info there!
