DIY Colour coded grille

Featured Replies

Picked up a grill off ebay for a bit of a bargain with the aim to have a go at colour coding it myself.

I am sure I have seen a thread on here before on the best way to do it and the best method of primering the chromed plastic.

I cant for the life of me find the thread using the search facility can anyone help?>

Cheers

in a nutshell, have a go at the "chrome" with a coarse sandpaper, then something finer to smooth up the surface. You need to really get rid of the shiny shiny effect.

The 2 or 3 coats of primer, then 3/4/5 (your preference) of thin coats of the colour of your choice. Then lacquer if you are really pushing the boat out but often people don't bother.

Cheers bud,

In the thread i've read before there was a mention of soaking the grille over night in cheap bleach.....?

Will Normal primer work or should I be getting some acid etch primer?

Ta

I think it's up to you.

Personally, I used primer and paint from Wilkinsons. Total spend about £7. It looked fine when first done but now there's a couple of stone chips/holes in the paint. I think this might have been because I skimped on the sanding rather than the quality of the paint. However more expensive paint, especially specialist car paint, would probably do a better job.

Not heard of the bleach before.

You could always wrap it in clear vinyl to help protect against stone chippies.

just simply question in this thread ;) , where i can find my car colour code? i want to buy spray what would match with my car colour.. i got a new mask too, and its totally black now. Its looking maybe little bit too "massive"

so i was thinking to paint that outest/external part to match with my car colour. Thx :)

Don't know about the mk1's but try the boot under the carpet next to the spare wheel. Should be a metal plaque. If not there perhaps under the bonnet....
