Want a reliable (30mpg+) 4x4 - Any opinions?

Featured Replies

- I need it to hold 5-7 people in decent comfort (Large family)

I don't think the Misubishi

has been mentioned - might be worthy of consideration but you'd be having a laugh if you could also get something that meets your desired fuel consumption.

Suzuki SJ413/Samurai if you want some fun offroad! I've had two, and they are relentless when serious offroading. Only 4 seats mind....... The one I still have is a '91 Samurai LWB, so the boot is mahoosive!

My dad runs a '99 Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.5 V6. Not bad on fuel and pretty capable offroad. But still, only 5 seats.

What about a Grand Vitara XL-7 (7 seater version), with a 2.7 V6 (180bhp).

Suzuki keep it simple with their 4x4 cars, which makes them cheap, reliable and bomb proof.

Isuzu Trooper, get the long wheel base Citation version. Citation is the one with all the toys & more likely to have been privately owned, hense less abuse

A friend had one, sold it with 240,000 miles on it only because he was offered a much newer one cheap with a mere 70,000 miles on it

Read this & note its done in 2004 so prices have tumbled http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/used_car_reviews/article440744.ece

RAV4's are pretty solid really. avoid the 1.8 petrol but there arent many of them around. the 2.0 petrol is fine and can do about 32 mpg. if its the older shape diesel sometimes they can go through clutches and flywheels so just make sure it has a full history. the new shape ones are fine so long as they have been dealer serviced too, but dont go for a T180/SR180, you will be seriously luck to get above 29mpg out of it. they are really thirsty.

any Land Cruiser, weather it be a 3.0D4D, 4.2TD Amazon they will run until the end of the world, dont have any worries with them at all, plus they will go anywhere also.

Hope this helps,

Matt
