Blowing fuses.

Featured Replies

Hi, new to the site

I recently bought a vrs estate and the fuse for the central locking/ interior keeps blowing (no.14) which is a bit annoying.

Is this a common fault? Or is it worth a trip back to the dealer?

The boot lights aren't working either so i imagine this has something to do with it.

Cheers

water ingress somewhere causing the issue i bet or broken cable shorting

best bet if you are not electrically minded take it back to the dealer for them to check

I could probably fix it myself, if i know what it is. I was hoping it was going to be a common thing.

I haven't had chance to have a good look over the car yet though so something might stand out.

Cheers

That fuse is for the power side of the Central Convenience Unit (CCU).

If it blows when the central locking is operated, I would first take a look at the tailgate lock motor

Unfortunately, the CCU has a connection to every point in the car, so as westallc says, it could be down to a short somewhere. A common place to find a broken wire is where it passes from the door pillar to the adjacent door. The best way to narrow the problem down, is to check all units connected to CCU and anything connected to that unit.

Check the door unit operation - lock/unlock, window up/down, heated mirror, door controls, flashing led.

Check the sunroof

Check the interior lights

Check tailgate lock

I've had a look over the car this morning and one of the boot lights is broken, Its hard to describe but the bulb holder has snapped off the plastic light cover so the 2 metal parts which would be either side of the bulb could touch.

Its blown the fuse again now after i've been in the boot and when i've locked it with the key the boots not locked.

Could that be causing the short?

It doesn't seem like it should to me because the bulb would connect those parts anyway but it depends how much the bulb affects the circuit. I'm not going to rule that out until someone who knows what they're doing do says so themselves.

Cheers for your replies guys.

If you mean the courtesy light, then maybe. The switch for the courtesy light is in the boot latch, so when you open the boot it connects the light circuit to ground. If the bulb holder 'live' is shorted to ground, then the lighting control unit output will be shorted to ground which would blow fuse 3 (not sure why 14 would blow).

Fix the bulb holder first and see if the problem recurs.
