Recommendations for a good HID lamp kit

Featured Replies

Don't want to throw a spanner into the works but these kits will be 'illegal' from 2012 (if they aren't already) as MOT requirements will be changed and HID's will be checked that they have auto levelling and a headlight washer system. Not sure if you know this but thought I would give you the heads up!

This issue crops up in nearly every topic relating to HID conversions, clicky have a look at what my mechanic said in post #78.

35w 5000K HID kit arrived this morning, so next delivery, very impressive.

Anyway I couldn't resist fitting one to see the difference (and obviously I wanted to check they worked before I have the coding done on Friday). Well I can't believe how different they are, considering I have Ring Xenon Max which are clearly superior to standard Halogen already installed, the HID's blew me away, and to make it even better, they are an absolute perfect colour match to the LED sidelights I just fitted.

It would only void the warranty on the light units and wiring no the whole car :)

Wrong I'm afraid.

Since the HID's could mess up anything on the electrics due to electrical noise they generate, then it's pretty much all electrics, motors etc that they could quite easily and correctly rule out of warranty.

Hmm shall i make it clearer for you

The light unit incorporates the motor and i also said wiring :dull: or are you trying to tell me if my Aircon packs in it won't be covered under warranty due to having HID's fitted.

Or is this a bit like saying that F1 in HD isn't possible yet i.e. you talking tosh :giggle:

Now, now chaps, put the handbags away!

See you friday morning Carl?

I don't have a handbag. I prefer a purse :p

Yes mate Friday is fine just text to let me know what time

Thanks for the recoding and DV death diagnosis, maybe see you next weekend if my mechanic isn't available.

I have a H11 kit from these guys, they where half the price of HIDS for you and it has been on 2 different cars over the last 14 months. Slimline ballasts, well packaged and quality waterproof connectors

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/

They also allow you to add the decoder to prevent blown bulb warnings to the kit for around a fiver iirc, the kits can be fitted with or without. No problems on the Prius, which was full CanBus or the Avensis.

Fully sorted then now with the HID kit ?

Would you highly recommend them?

I assume you were out in the dark to test?

Did you have to get the headlights adjusted to suit?

Cant wait for mine emoticon-0110-tongueout.gif

Fully sorted then now with the HID kit ? All fitted, took approx' 15 minutes and coding done yesterday by vRSCarl.

Would you highly recommend them? Definately, the light output, colour temperature is identical to my LED sidelights and even though I had upgraded my halogen's the HIDs blow them out of the water.

I assume you were out in the dark to test? Not driven in the dark yet, but I have seen the difference at night, see above. :giggle:

Did you have to get the headlights adjusted to suit? For the time being I have rolled the leveling wheel to suit, I did a b4 and after mark on the garage door, they are getting proper alignment next monday along with the fitting of a new timing belt, water pump and Diverter valve :o

Sounds good to me

I ordered the same oes as you.

Dealer has no problem doing coding for me and said it wont affect my warranty.

OH

can you give me exact details of coding needed??

Was also thinking of getting the fog light mod turned on as well

Anything else I should get them to do??emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

All Carl did was activate controller 9 to 'Xenons without shutters' I pressume as the car is fitted with projector lamps the intention was to fit Xenon's across the range?! the shutter part relates to Bi-xenons by the way! He also turned off the cold diagnostic to preserve the life of the LED sidelights.

On yours you could have the following:

Fogs as turning lights also they will activate when you indicate, anti-hijack, coming home/leaving lights, tear drop rear wiper so after you squirt the washer it will run a wipe after approx' 10 seconds to clear any drips. Thats all I can think of at the moment, some of this can be activated through the maxi-dot (if you have it) iirc

Thanks for that.

Might do the fogs when turning,

Anti Hijacking? >> is this where only drivers door opens with key?

I can do that in maxidot if so.

Coming home/leaving home > Can do in Maxidot and have activated.

Might look into the rear teardrop option as well

Cheers

Anti hijacking is the car locking itself about 15mph, and unlocking hen the engine is switched off and keys taken out.

Teardrop can be switched off front and rear, well worth it in salty conditions as it avaoids the annoying dry smearing after washing the screen.

Cornering fogs only after MY2007. Earlier models don't have the controller support for this.

Mike

Thanks for that

Anti Hijack sounds worthwhile

my one is a My2011 so should be fine

Update for you mate, just done a wee bit of night driving................only I could have sworn it was still daylight! B)

So in a word the HIDs are fekin awesome, well pleased I went for the 5000K.

I may get the kit Hauptmann has suggested @4300k which looks the clearest, brightest colour. Can someone confirm it's the standard H7 bulb not H7c or R?

I'm also a little concerned about the MOT business and them not being allowed by law soon, saying that it has been threatened for many years now.....

Standard H7.

Dunno re MOT as in Ireland, but have read various posts re & it would seem there is nothing to worry about for a good while yet at least.

I have 4300K-looks OE, although 5000K would not be hugely different. 6000K would be too blue for my liking.

Great stuff,,

Mine are in the post right now,,,

Got the H7 @ 5000k

Good for these dark mornings/nights

Wonder is there a whiter bulb for the headlight now as well or will it be a case of drive on dims all the time now as they would be good enough emoticon-0103-cool.gif

Time for an HID Leon upgrade Mike? Pity they're not projectors as std really, and I've never even see a Leon Mk1 with proper xenons, which makes spare projector units unlikely! Were they even available as an option?

Teardrop can be switched off front and rear, well worth it in salty conditions as it avaoids the annoying dry smearing after washing the screen.

Can you remind me where this is? Presume it was in 09 but I connected the other day and couldn't see the option for front teardrop. Found the rear option though :|

Also, do you know about coding for fogs to be used for CH/LH lighting? Want to use them instead, to preserve the HIDs but couldn't figure that out either.

Cheers,

Steve

I flicked on the main beam just to see, and tbh, I don't think I will ever use it again, seriously mate you will be blown away by the quality of the HIDs, enjoy.

When you open 09 Central Electronics, look at the drop down menu under the warning to write down original coding to see the control modules

Open the WISCHER controller, (I think it's the 2nd one down) and you should find the option for front teardrop in there.

You can also change it by subtracting 2048 from the short code of the WISCHER controller

You can get chavved up projector lights for the Leon (at a price), but no, they were never offered as an option.

Kim hates driving at night, and the amount I use it, it's simply not work changing to an HID system. I wouldn't be happy using one anyway on lights that were not projectors.

I've got a full set of screen shots for every page in VCDS already printed out, and just had a look through them all. There's nothing in there to suggest that front fogs can be used as CH/LH lights. I'd be interested to know about this one too.

Did you get anywhere with the auto rain closing windows???

Mike

Thanks Mike, will take a look tomorrow.

Thought that was the case with the Leon. Sounds fair enough anyway, based on the Leon's use. Maybe some improved dipped beam bulbs, when you're getting your Octy main ones?

The use of fogs as CH/LH when xenons are fitted was suggested by one of the foreign members. From what I understand it just consisted of coding for xenons being fitted (as we've done anyway). I just have CH set usually, and this continued to use the dipped beam. So I've turned CH for the moment. Might seek some Ross-Tech assistance, see if they know any more.

Rain close - was thinking about this earlier actually! No luck at this end I'm afraid.

Cheers,

Steve

I have this option on my Maxidot but do know that with Vagcom can be activated ( I have a cable)

Can you post up a screenshot of the relevant VCDS screen?

Thanks.

Might have ;)

There's clearly something we're missing with the rain sensor. I also recall another member having the same result with the sunroof not functioning.

Also reminds me of my 2nd Fabia, with the KVW-100 module installed, to auto-close windows/roof on lock. That managed to do the roof, but not the windows :wonder:

It's all Black Magic, I'm telling you

This is mine with HID kit fitted using 50 watt kit and 6000 k bulbs, lower fog light bulbs are, PHILIPS diamond vision 5000k white headlight bulb H1. side light bulbs are canbus friendly 3 led 501 capless bulbs. ive turned the cold start off on the headlamp system and side light system using vagcom and been running these for about 9 months and never had a issue.
