Powder coating alloys

Featured Replies

Hi guys n gals,

Ive found a local company that powder coats alloy wheels and they can do it to any colour for £40 per wheel. Ive always been a fan of black alloys and was thinking a nice anthracite colour will look nice wth my blue Octy vRS.

Ive had the car 4 years now but have recently caught the 'new car bug'. I test drove the new Fabia vRS and although very impressed with the performance, as soon as I sat in it I knew it was no where near as nice a feeling as sitting in my Octavia. Thinking that re coating my alloys will reignite the spark with my vRS.

Has anyone out there had it done to their car?

Yes - a company called the Alloy wheel specialist in the north-east.

They go slightly further than powder coating though, they use paint and a baked on laquer but the finish is very strong and durable

Be aware though does the £40 include removing and re-fitting of the tyres?

Where are you based? I did it last week to my car using My Alloys in Basingstoke for the minor refurb and paint. They came up fantastic!

I had a colour called 'black chrome' which was a bit more expensive but suited me nicely as it retained the metallic look without being standard silver. A plain powdercoat black suit many folks but I wasn't so sure.

Snoop about for reputable places as a little bit of saving won't mean much if the laquer or worse starts peeling of after a few weeks.

DSC00055.jpg mine are black chrome from the wheel specialist works out at 70 each wheel worth it though

Thanks guys, Im up in sunny Ayrshire. The £40 is on their website, its a place in Kilmarnock. Ive a couple of mechanic mates who recommend this company so they should do a good job, I'll double check with them tho that the £40 per wheel is the final price.

:D

/muckipup returns from checking his car is still in the car park and not stolen by Pagey

Yeah, I'll get a couple of pictures up as mine seem a bit darker than bluvrs2's although it may be the picture. I think they look good but darker colours are a bit 'marmite' for folks - some like 'em, others hate 'em. I went for the black chrome as my feeling was that plain black wheels would 'disappear' on a black car but Chris Ellis has them on a yellow Octy which went well.

Chris's wheels are Anthracite the same as my Pescara's that I had done. I have also had my R32 Omanyts redone in Silver by My Alloys in Basingstoke.

I like your DRLs  are they Philips daylight ones? How hard were they to fit?

Hi , Was also thinking of getting my wheels recoated, be sure to let us know how you get on with the place in Killie.

Thanks, there are osram, once I figured it out they went that difficult, grille insert needed modifying but again not that troublesome, I did have assistance though, be glad to advise if you are thinking of investing.

These are the ones I have, they are good, but I managed to get water behind them when I jet washed the car so they condense up a bit now.

If its Kilmarnock Powder Coating Services, they are brilliant. They done my wheels for my Ibiza and were top notch.

Was going to get them to do mine on the Octavia aswell for next year. ;)

That's a lot less than the Philips ones! Thanks for the heads up on the water. I could use some sealant round the grommets before I install to safeguard against that. I'd be interested to know where you connected them in. Do they come on with the ignition?

I have to say, they look very OEM and not out of place like some do.

I ended up taking them apart to dry them out, but when I reassembled them it cracked the lens around the screw. I have since sealed them with insulating tape running it over the front to hide the screws which I think adds to the OEM look.

With regards wiring, mine do come on with the ignition, which again makes them more OE, I have run the negative to the neg' terminal of the battery, earth is on a bolt holding the rad' and the live is spliced into a wire on the headlights, iiirc I used the black wire going into no.1 terminal on the main headlight block, then covered in heat shrink. TBH I did't figure this out myself, I have vRSCarl to thank for that.

Some more pictures for you,
