radio aerial

Hey all,

Dont know if many more of you have real crap reception with the original aerial or if it is just me.

Its not the area i live in because my girlfriend gets real good signal everywhere around us in her C2.

Any ideas or suggestions for different aerials that work better? And if so are they easy to change?

Cheers

Do you have the standard stereo or an aftermarket one?

standard radio

It may be worth changing it for another one as it may be duff!

Either that or try another type altogether. Many VW's use the same fitting so I guess they should be up to the job. Is yours the rear twisty one? If so, try a long skinny one from a Yaris.

I have this problem but with a after market unit. Someone mentioned a signal booster... Does anyone have any more information on this?

A signal booster is integrated into the original stereo. It is prudent when installing an aftermarket stereo to add a signal booster.

Here we go http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PC5-90-Skoda-Fabia-Amplified-ISO-DIN-Aerial-Adaptor-/160379622921?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Terminals_Cabling_ET&hash=item25575ed609 one end plugs into the aerial, other the stereo, the blue wire plugs into the blue female bullet connector from the stereo which provides power.

Thanks mate. Ordered. :)

More like you've had water ingress in the aeriel base, There's a PCB in there. The last I heard it was about £13 for a new aeriel assy!

Mine is TOO sensitive - in Gloucester it picks up traffic announcements from Radio Shropshire and Radio Leicester!

I lost my aerial..... ( someone just yanked it out including the screw base).... so had a big problem... which I solved quite easily..... removed the radio... and the aerial plug..... cut the aerial plug wire about 6 inches from the plug.... soldered on (or you could just twist on) about 1 metre of ordinary 7/22 stranded wire, and laid it behind the passenger side glove box..... works on all the local FM stations.... but does not work on the Medium wave or Longwave frequencies...

(Just make sure that you insulate the joint with insulating tape,.... and the other end is not bare against any metal work.)

Mike B has the answer, there is a small PCB in the base of the aerial, not in the radio. The gasket can split which allow water onto this PCB causing shorts. You can remove it (two small self tap screws). If you are lucky ,and the copper track is intack ,dry it with a hair dryer, clean it with brake/clutch cleaner ,and an old toothbrush .

How easy is it to drop the headliner for access? Would just removing the tailgate seal from the top give enough room to get a hand and whatever tool necessary in there?

Could such an issue also cause a stereo to randomly turn off if it was powering the amplifier?

Yes you can access, and see the nut,and cable plugs ,by removing the plastic panel. It is quite easy to remove and refit, but be careful with this cold spell ,when plastic is quite brittle. You only need to nip the nut ( about 22mm ) up reasonably tight. I used an adjustable spanner. I dont think aerial and amplifier problems will turn off the radio ,only removing ,or shorting the 12 volt supply would turn it off. Double check all the radio connections might sort it.
