Buying a new car - anything to look out for ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Been lurking around here for a while gathering info. on the new Fabia VRS.

I've got a test drive booked later this week and will hopefully be ordering after that (will be a small step up from my Felicia 1.3 :giggle: )

I've never bought a brand new car before so I was just wondering if there's anything I should look out for ?

I've already seen threads about GAP insurance (this is something I didn't know about) - is there anything else I might be asked to purchase that I can get cheaper elsewhere or don't need etc. ?

Thanks.

As you say, GAP will be offered but do your homework as usually the dealer price is more expensive than can be obtained elsewhere (although dealers do sometimes have offers where they have to meet monthly sales targets on GAP so will offer it cheaper - so I've seen anyway).

Paint protection - this really is up to you but unless you can get them to do it for £50 and chuck in the top-up pack then you can do it cheaper yourself - a decent pot of polish and wax will be a lot cheaper than the sometimes £250 cost from the garage. Essentially all they are doing is applying a wax to the paintwork (and maybe a interior stain spray which again you can buy and apply yourself)so you have to weigh up if the cost for them to do it is better than doing it yourself (you may not be able to). Personally I enjoy cleaning and waxing a car but each to their own. If you want to know more about the stuff the garage uses then do an internet search for detailing forums and have a read.

Have a look at the monthly service plans and see if it would work for you - we have done a 2 year plan as we have our Fabia on a 3 year PCP so by year 3 we will be looking to trade-in.

Ensure you weigh up the options list - you are buying the car as first owner so have the opportunity to spec how you want and can afford - no going back once the car is delivered!

Search Google images for colours - you will probably find real life pictures of most colours you are considering - the car will look a lot different in natural surroundings than in the brochure.

Overall, enjoy the process (even if spending money gives you butterflies!).

Also check internet prices and give the dealer a chance to match them or get close.

Price I saw on the internet last week for Fabia vrs hatch was £13895 and estate £14295.

Thanks for the input.

VRS now test driven (only a short test drive unfortunately) and ordered

Surprisingly the dealer never mentioned GAP insurance or service plans but did manage to sell me the interior/exterior protection (after a bit of haggling over the overall price).

Check its been done properly

I'm 99.9% certain it was NOT done (Lifeshine) on my wifes Fabia Sport in 09. (Eventually Stolen)

Couldnt prove it but was VERY unhappy with the salesman that conned it out of me.

BE CAREFUL..It appears to be a dealer scam!!!

You should receive a certificate as proof it's been done. Mine came thought the post a couple of weeks after collection on the car. Believe it also acts as the guarantee/warranty for the protection that it should give.

Thanks for the tip, will look out for the certificate when I eventually get the car (sometime next year).
