shaking steering wheel

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a problem with the steering wheel vibration. The problem appears on a highway at speeds of 140kmh and above. When I hold the steering straight is ok, but when i turn slightly left or right steering wheel starts to tremble. What could be wrong?

Sorry for my bad English. I come from Slovenia.

Probably a balance weight has come off a front wheel. Get the front wheels balanced.

Also, your english is very good! ;)

front tyres are brand new and balanced

I would have the balancing re-checked. Otherwise it could be a faulty tyre, damaged wheel or a suspension/steering linkage fault. If the problem only started after you had the new tyres fitted, then it's most probably the cause. It's easy for a balance weight to fall off if not correctly fitted.

As above, first and foremost, if this still hasnt fixed it, get the wheel alignment checked (tracking).

did you see if the YTS boy did the balancing ?? :) or someone who knew how to do it properly?

definitely sounds like balance

but a quick snoop round the front could also be an idea, check wheel nuts, track rod ends and suspension joints but those problems are not normally speed related

And the vibration only started after the new tyres were fitted?

If so, then I'd think it's one of the following in decreasing order of probability, but check (2) yourself before bothering a fitter:-

1) Wheels were not correctly balanced (or a stick on weight wasn't correctly fitted and has been thown).

2) Tyres are not correctly fitted; check visually that they're right side out (asymmetric only), right way round (unidirectional only), and the light spot is in the correct place. There should be a dot of colour on the tyre wall, and if there is, it should be next to the valve.

Or very much less probable than (1) and (2)

3) A defective tyre is out of true.

4) The fitter left something inside one of the tyres. I've only seen this happen once, but it is possible.

wheel was balanced by my father twice, and is 100% correct. Now i have on winter tyres, this problem was already on summer tyres. So must be problem somewhere else.

Note that when i hold steering wheel straight is ok, this problem is only at slihgtly turn.

Read this and see if it helps any?
