Ticking noise on new Octy vRS

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Probably me being ultra paranoid but I have noticed that I seem to have a slight ticking noise from the engine when it is running. I am sure this sound is normal but I wondered what it was.

It was dark when I came home tonight so I couldn't really check under the bonnet.

Am I just being paranoid

You'll probably find it's the charcoal canister solenoid, especially if its a fairly quick ticking. I thought that when I had my A4 but found out it was normal. Given the cars use the same technology as the A4's et al, don't worry, it's normal.

Excellent. Yes, it is a fairly quick ticking noise, so I guess it's the charcoal canister.

Where is it located in the engine bay, just so I can double check?

Cheers

I'm pretty sure they're usually on the drivers side somewhere. If my ex-octy is anything to go by, quite difficult to find. The clicking noise came from by there, sounded like a vag charcoal canister and was dismissed as that that quickly. :D

I had that too, and went back to the dealer. I can't remember what it was - either something to do with a fuel tank/fuel line expansion valve venting air as fuels warms up a few minutes after starting or something to with the turbo but either way don't worry, it's nothing.

In fact if you want to, towards the left of the engine bay you can look for a flat topped cylindrical thingummy approx 1" in diameter - put your finger on it to feel the vibration and you will see that it is exactly what's ticking. The mechanic confirmed that was the something-or-other and it should make that noise, whatever it is.

I'm sure my blinding you with the technicalities has really put your mind at rest :D:rolleyes::thumbup:

Oh yeah I mean "left side of the engine bay" as you stand looking at it from the front...so driver's side/offside as pointed out above. If you still can't find it post to say so and I'll post a picture or something
