Upgraded bulbs - which ones, non hid

Featured Replies

Disconnecting the loom is easy, there's a locking tab on the large connector which you either pull upwards slightly or push inwards, can't remember which, but there was a click and then the connector could be removed and the headlight freed.

Took about 10 minutes per side on my FL.

I fitted the latest Osram Nightbreaker Plus as recommended by Auto Express, they are brighter but it's not an amazing improvement.

I guessed it was something like that but tentative efforts did not get very far.

No luck with the Halfords web site either. The only Bosch products seem to be sparking plugs.

If you want something a bit more powerful there are various bulbs designed for offroad & rally that give more power. I ran 120 Watt bulbs in my Mk1 Octavia with no problems to the wiring etc. THEY ARE ILLEGAL but with the state of lights (or lack of lights) tolerated by the authorities I took the view that having 2 that worked would be a bonus :giggle:

Theres a couple here but there are a lot of other suppliers, just google a few things

But they are illegal because they can blind other road users, possibly leading to a crash injuring them and you, and also invalidating your insurance. Not worth the risk, surely?

Many cars have horrendously adjusted legal headlights that blind or worse headlights missing. All of which seems to be ignored in the main by the Police. On my Mk1 Octy I had the manually adjustable lights & would always run them low unless I was pushing on at night but I was always careful not to blind others. I built the car mainly for the Cannonball runs & needed bigger lights for those high speed nightime dashes. I did consider adding spots but a set of spots on the front would have reduced the Skoda stealth effect during daylight. I ran them for about 70,000 miles & had no problems from the police or with MOT's & was flashed far less than we are in the Octy Scout with Xenons, that I struggle with as the dip is horrendous yet we get flashed. Obviously a bit of a design oops by Skoda,

I ended up buying the Osrams from powerbulbs, next day delivery  They're a bit whiter/brighter than the Ring Max +100% jobbies that they replaced.

Just found an advert in autocar with a discount code: ACNOVDEC10 for 10% off B)

I put some Bosch Pure Light in today. Will let you know later in the week if they are any better than factory fit.

foo, any feedback yet?

I too went to Halfords to check out their 'Pure Light' range after the positive feedback from this thread.

Worth noting the reason they aren't on Halfords website is because not all branches stock them - according to their customer services anyway.

I'm actually looking to replace the headlight bulbs in my Peugeot not the Scout (it already has xenons).

I wasn't expecting them to be quite so expensive, the Plus 50's were £22.99 each, the Plus 90's nearer £30 each.

I can't justify the best part of £50 for headlight bulbs on my £500 306!

Halfords own brand Extreme's were on 'buy one get one free' which would have worked out at around £25 for a pair but I think there are better deals to be had on the internet...

Just curious if you've noticed a huge difference?

P20, your a hero, that code worked!

I got a pair of sidelight bulbs thrown in for free too

Ordered the Osram Night Breaker Plus, £25 inc. P&P with the 10% knocked off

Can't justify almost double that for the Bosch Pure Lights, would love to know how they perform though if anyone has fitted them yet?

In my local Halfords a pair of Bosch Pure LIght H7 are under £19 a pair. That's the standard price. Not sure where you got your prices from,,,,?

That is for the standard Pure Lights - on the cardboard backer.

The Plus 50 and Plus 90 are individually boxed in their own plastic case and start at £22.99 each.

There's a place called autobulbs online UK that has the Nightbreakers for 14.99 pounds and free delivery which is cheaper than what you've found so far?

You get the blue sidelights thrown in also and they even sent over to NZ here for free too.

Yep, saw these, you are right they are £14.99 but unfortunately they aren't the latest 'Plus' versions.

From Osram's website:

"NIGHT BREAKER PLUS have up to 50% more lifetime compared to the first generation of NIGHT BREAKER headlamps. This was achieved by a new filament design and an optimized share of prime gas filling. And on top, the high quality, gold plated contacts (H4, H7) provide superior conductivity."

True but at 50% of the price for half the runtime if you are looking to see if they are an improvement is worth a go I reckon. The light output is the same.

Guys, I have the Elegance facelift Octavia 2 with halogens. I don't want to install any relay or extra wiring but wish for whiter light for my dipped beams. Can i replace my current H7 halogens with Osram Nightbreaker Plus by a simple DIY without any extra electricals? How much whiter is this Osram compared to my stock halogens? Is it comparable color to the Xenon HID as on L&Ks?

It's just a simple bulb change and gives much brighter light. It isn't much whiter though, and certainly not the same colour as proper HIDs.

In the Which? test it was the standard Pure Lights that were brighter than the Philips Xtremes and the Nightbreakers. They didn't test the Plus 50 and Plus 90's. Having now tested the standard Pure LIght I can confirm that they are very bright.

I wish I'd known that before I'd bought the Osram Night Breakers.

The standard Pure Lights were just in the same black, yellow and red packaging lost in amongst all their other standard bulbs so I assumed these were just their regular OEM alternative.

When I saw the Pure Light Plus 50's and Plus 90's next to Halfords own premium brand I assumed that these must be the ones that outperformed the competition.

Still, I have noticed a huge improvement with the Night Breaker's which makes my 80 mile drive home much more pleasant :giggle:
