Another Headlights thread

Featured Replies

Following on from my failed attemts to change the sidelights. :'(

Are the inner high beams seperatley adjustable?, the reflector for them appears to be a seperate part, but the only screws etc. that look like they may do the job are some tiny Torx E6 heads and they just turn around and around without moving anything?

These highs are way too high, so I was trying to lower them down a bit, all a bit annoying as they should have been correct.

You have xenon headlights with AFS, these can only be adjusted by the dealer using their diagnostic tool as the beam height is computer controlled, attempting it yourself will make things far worse.

The height and beam pattern with AFS is constantly adjusted based on road speed, in town the beam should be quiet short and on the motorway the beam should be very long lighting quiet a way into the distance. This is by design, and cannot be altered.

I'm not messing with super duper beams, just the H3 High beams, but perhaps they are electronically controlled too, like the others as you say?

The headlights are BI-xenon, that means that you have xenon high beam and normal beam headlights. The H3 bulb is used when you need to flash the headlights, but are also on in main beam. However when used with main beam they should be drowned out by the xenon light.

Why do you think they are too high? Do you feel there is insufficient light nearer to the ground?

As I've stated elsewhere, the lights are the most impressive feature of these cars. The backroad lighting at night is beyond belief. It's like two lighthouses strapped to the front of the car. They are by some margin the best lights I have ever seen on a car.

Had a few numpties try to main beam my dip beam as a jealous protest - have they regreted that or what? When they get main beam from me their faces actually begin to melt LOL!

The lights are indeed awsome, but my Inner high H3's do light up the tops of trees, so I was thinking they may be better fired straight down the road.

LOL

Yes, I have noticed the trees. The tops of the trees! Looking at how far the light travels though I'm not sure lowering them would help much (if you can indeed lower them) and then think of all the lovely trees you'd miss out on!!

The first time I had xenon was on my mk5 GTI..and I thought the same thing (lighthouses etc)..until many people on the road were flashing me...(to be fair the light on DIPPED beam was just incredible and there was even more to be had on main beam!).. I popped in the dealer and they hadn't set the lights up properly at the pre-delivery inspection(!)..so it was on a default factory setting causing the beam pattern to be wrong. It might be worth getting yours checked..

cheers

No checking required on mine, they are correct and ARE lighthouses

I agree, the Home position of dipped light need to set by VAG as the car cannot level the home position itself, once home position is set then the car's AFS move lights left right up down relative to home position and so is the high beam .. so if home position is wrong then everything will be wrong. I recently got my left headlamp changed yes changed (as its latch/bracket was broken and it was shaky) after replacing the head lamp my both beams are at different levels which i assume is either due to incorrect home position or incorrect tighneing of latch / brackets of headligh assembly of left light (newly installed) i am hoping this wil be fixed once i visit the workshop and get it set using VAG com

Wondering how others are finding the auto setting of the headlights. Mine seem to be on all the time :wonder:

Despite it being so sunny yesterday that I nearly went blind the lights remained on? Is the sensitivity adjustable?

A work colleague made exactly the same remark about the auto-lights on his new Octavia vRS. These are standard halogen rather than Xenon, not that it will make any difference to the sensitivity of the sensor.

Best regards

David

Mine are useless, to be honest, i love the auto wipers, they work very well, but the Auto-lights are less than impressive...

Mine too. Exactly the same as yours. There does not seem to be any consistency to it either.

Sometimes they go off at what I think is about the right light level, but most of the time they are on, even when the sun is high in the sky.

I do not run the DRL's and was wondering if I did, does this make the headlights less sensitive as the car knows that lights are on at the front already. I have no ideea about this, just a thought :o

I'm struggling with my DRLs.

I've tried to get them to come on but the main beam seems to come on instead.
