Indeed, very interesting, and complements MikeHart's discussion in a separate thread about his Fabia 1.6 TDI 90.

One thing I didn't notice was any comments on refinement from the disgruntled ownes (AE's own review praised this aspect except for a slight gruffness under acceleraton IIRC), but I've also heard this engine criticised for being unrefined in some cars. I don't think any owners have criticised refinement on this forum

Whilst there are comments about poor economy form the 1.6 TDI engined cars on the VW page and the SEAT page, I cannot see anyone complaining on the Skoda page!

Hi Adrianh1, yes that is very interesting. However, I wouldn't necessarily draw too many conclusions about the 1.6cr engine from those comments. Cleary some are disgruntled with the smaller Polo with that engine, but you cannot automatically assume it is the same for Skoda cars with that engine. The same engines often runs different software in the ecu for fitment in a larger or different car. This will be due to different gearing, weight of the car, state of tune for the engine mechanicals and a dozen other reasons etc etc. However, my colleagues in the trade at VW dealers ships are not experiencing problems with that car yet. This could change of course. But that's still very interesting to read and worth watching.
